I would have thought that 'sneakers' was the old term.... I usually say tennis shoes or running shoes....

I think it kind of has to do with what part of the country you live in.

people still have ice boxes? They really need to get a refrigerator! ( and it is spelled that way)

Up until about 2 years ago, I had a fridge with an ice box! I was flat broke, and a friend gave it to my roommate and I...It was SUCH a chore to defrost it, so we never did...the ice would built up til almost noting fit in there, and in order to close the door, we'd have to stick something in there to jam it closed.

And how about pocketbook. Sounds like a book you put in your pocket instead of being a purse.

    I still say pocketbook. :blushing:

I would say tennis shoes but mostly I called them my gym shoes. I have my gym shoes, work shoes, and flip flops! I don't think I've ever said sneakers!

Definitely! Growing up in the city, my brothers and I wore "sneakers" and not "tennis shoes" and definitely NOT "tennies", we watched TV in the "parlor", not the living room, and we hung out o nthe "stoop" not the porch. If I'm around my family, those terms are not weird. Anyone else looks at me like i spoke another language.

I don't know about this one but does anyone say "Worsh" instead of Wash. Like, my dad says worshcloth (of course he would spell it wash), and I know several people that say it that way!

I want a parasol. I use an umbrella in the summer to keep the sun off me but a parasol would be cooler I think. No pun intended. That's cooler as in neater.

Ok, I thought a parasol was fancier than an umbrella but apparently they're interchangeable. I googled where I can buy a parasol and I keep getting umbrellas. :grumble:

The tennis shoe, sneaker thing reminded me of a routine I saw Jerry Seinfeld do once. He reached the conclusion that East coasters said, "sneakers" and "soda" and West coasters said "tennis shoes" and "pop." There were other comparisons that I don't recall.

I do know that after my cousin from Seattle met a New Yorker and married him and move east, years later we were at a family reunion in Washingon state and I heard her, in the space of five minutes tell one of her kids he could NOT have a "soda" and to put his "sneakers" back on!!!

So apparently, Jerry was on to something.

Yep...we do. Except that here in GA we say Coke instead of soda. Even if it's another form of soda...we say Coke. lol.

We say WARSH not WORSH but spell it wash. My ex brother in law always made fun of me for saying it that way, he would say "Oh my garsh, gotta warsh!"

My dad would never say you're going to spill something, it was always you're going to upset something. He was from Boston, Mass. He never said battery...(bat-tery) he said it (bat-tree).

My flip flops used to be called thongs until they started making Thong undies!! Now I can't say I'm going to wear my thongs because people wonder why a 200+ lb woman would ever wear a thong!!!! LOL

When I was younger "thongs" were things that you put on your feet. Now we call them flip-flops.

My mom still calls them that even though we have corrected her numerous times. I can't wait for the day that she goes to WalMart and asks a clerk where the thongs are and ends up in the lingerie section.

That's funny. I say pop and I'm from Ohio.

OOH! I still say "SIKE!" . My husband laughs at me for that one and tries to tell my it would be spelled psych. He's nuts.

I'm originally from Cali, where soda is soda, but apparently in the northwest everyone calls it "pop". I'm sorry, but pop is a noise or your father, not a drink.

Oh, and no one really calls them Cellular Phones anymore. They're either cell, or phone.

Oh and I also feel like no one says underwear anymore. But clearly, they still exist.
