  • I find before and after (transformation) photos to be very inspiring. There is a long running thread on the bodybuilding.com forums where people have shared their photos. From time to time I like to click through the thread and photos to see what losing the weight actually looks like. Very inspiring and motivating to keep at it!

I have my goal bikini hanging on the wall, it's red with white hibiscus flowers and it's drop dead sexy. It's hanging right in the right spot to be a great motivation. That's my vain motivation...
  • I read this recently and it has scared me into exercising more! Apparently rapper HEAVY D died from what is known as deep vein thrombosis. This is a blood clot in the legs that loosens up and travel to the heart/lungs/etc. and can kill you. It happened to rapper Heavy D after a long flight of sitting down on an international flight. I didn't know you could die from sitting down too much/too long! Very scary, get up and exercise and get your blood circulating properly!

"Deep leg vein thrombosis is often associated with long plane flights, in which a clot can form due to prolonged immobility."

    1. Reduce your risk of heart attack/heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and avoid taking meds for the rest of your life. Live longer.
    2. Be able to shop for clothes in hundreds of more stores. Be able to find a lot more clothes you really like in your size that looks great on you. You'll have an incredible wardrobe!
    3. Attract more people of the opposite sex. Turn heads. Have a better sex/love life. Not have to settle but find someone who is a great match for you!
    4. Go swimming in public without worrying about what others think. Go to the beach. Really enjoy a vacation!
    5. Increase your chances of getting a job or a promotion over other candidates. Make more money in your lifetime. Have the ability to work more physical jobs if you like at any point in the future.
    6. Every time you meet someone new for the rest of your life, you'll make a great first impression.
    7. You'll have increased energy and much more productive days where you accomplish a lot more and you'll be even more successful at what you love doing.
    8. You'll finally be able to stop worrying about losing the weight or having the same new years resolution each year and can set exciting new goals and move forward with your life.

You'll have a lot more self confidence which will lead to great possibilities in life as you take more risks and go and do things you never did before!
  • I highly recommend watching and searching for good weight loss documentaries. You can find many of them on Netflix streaming or by doing a google video search. Simply go to google and click more then videos. Search for them and then click long so it sorts them by the longest ones that are available.

link to some weight loss documentary videos...

10 Things you need to know about losing weight

  • GREAT NEWS: YOU ARE BURNING MORE CALORIES THAN YOU THINK WHEN YOU EXERCISE
In the documentary "10 Things you need to know about losing weight" they go over a thing known as "afterburn effect". This is where after you exercise, you go on to burn sometimes up to twice as many calories or more during the rest of the day! So if you've been on an exercise bike, treadmill or elliptical or whatever machine and you feel like your calories burned could be higher and you feel discouraged or like what's the point...DON'T GIVE UP! You actually are burning A LOT MORE CALORIES afterwards! It's been scientifically proven. Watch that documentary mentioned above or search google for "afterburn effect".

Here is a great article that talks about afterburn. You don't need to do high intensity activity to get it, but if you want to have even more afterburn, he mentions occasional spurts of higher intensity activity can lead to a much higher after burn effect. Many websites mention as little as 20 seconds to a minute at a time even!

  • One thing that has helped me stay motivated is buying new clothes that fits. Research fashion/style and you'll learn that clothes that fits just right (not 1-2+ sizes too large for you/baggy) actually makes you look thinner!

In the past as an overweight person I used to wear really baggy clothes and I have since learned that it actually makes you look more sloppy with all that extra fabric to even fatter looking. I find buying some new clothes not only BOOSTS MY CONFIDENCE it also discouarges me from gaining any weight because I can feel how they fit and I want to be able to keep wearing them. The clothes help serve as a STOP GAP. You don't have to replace your whole wardrobe or go nuts, but don't put off buying new clothes until you reach your goal weight. Buy a little as you reach big milestones and they WILL HELP.

So I HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying some new clothes that fits really well as you hit new milestones to help block you from gaining it back. Try to find some pants that are your size (don't need to wear a belt to wear them). STOP BUYING sizes too large.

Also I find it very motivating to know that if I lose a few more pounds I can start shopping at certain stores. I've already eyed certain clothes I really want to wear. Nothing sucks more than going to a store and seeing something you really like but you can't wear it because they don't have your size! So clothing shopping and looking for clothes could be a huge motivator. Visualize how great you'll look wearing it!
  • LOG EVERYTHING. Post what you are eating in your food diary! I've been checking out a number of people's food diary's on here that are public and I notice that many people skip days. I can only assume because they binged/cheated or lost control and are embarrassed to log it.

Then I read that one woman on here ate a large Dairy Queen Blizard and then went to log it and realized it was 1,100 calories! She posted that she felt it should be outright ILLEGAL for something like that to have so many calories and that after she realized it, she is less likely to have one again. So LOG EVERYTHING to learn the truth about it and it could be just what you need to stay on track.

I believe we eat certain things because we really don't know how bad they are. When you log it, it puts it in your face. You have to look it up and you learn all of it's dirty secrets and how it effects your daily calorie amounts. You could eat that large blizard or you could eat __. Start thinking in those terms of what else you could have instead for the same amount of calories. I think this is very important and could help!

I agree about logging everything. It does make you aware of what you are eating. I would note, however, that skipped days can simply indicate a person is busy or possibly, OMG not around any WMDs (wireless mobile devices). So assumptions are not always correct and things are not always what they appear to be.

A friend posted this recently (or something close): Many people give up on a diet because their progress is slow, but what they fail to realize is that it IS progress.

I apologize, I'm new here so assumed the worst. However I did see some where they skipped a day, reported a day, skipped a day, reported a day, etc. and kept posting days afterwards and didn't go back to fill in those missing days. There was someone who posted on the forum asking why they couldn't lose weight and they got 5+ responses commenting on how they were skipping days.

I watched a documentary recently where they mentioned that many overweight people under report by up to 40% on what they think they are actually eating. They forget that they are eating horribly every other day or had that huge dessert or snack. I think it's just a good reminder to myself and others to not get discouraged if it happens. It likely will happen, we are all human. Just be sure to log it and face it for what it is.

    Great website!
