I just started an outdoor run...a beginner. My shin on my left leg hurts. My right leg is fine just my left hurts. What to do? It usually gets better later in the walk/run but the first few 10-15 minutes the pain is unbearable. Please advise me.

  • Do you have real running shoes, that you were properly fitted for (like from a running store)? They make all the difference in the world!

it's probably shin splints. Here's a good article on what too do (no need to re-invent the wheel)

Ice your legs after a run, it will go away and stop running if it hurts really bad, you can do more damage than good that way!!!

Good luck, I am a beginner runner also, my first 5k on November 1st!!!!

This happened to me in March...I blame it on bad shoes and running too much too soon.

I strongly advise you to take it easy for the next week or two so it doesnt get worse. I know thats the last thing you want to hear but I kept tring to run before my shin splints were healed and I ended up not being able to run (orbarely walk) for 4 months!!

Nolachik - are you having cramps in your calves or what kind of pain? I have extremely tight calves and have been dealing with it for 10+ years. After a surgery for what they thought was compartment syndrome I think I have it figured out. Didn't need the surgery since it was just tight muscles. Now it's just a matter of fixing it. Having tight calves for 10+ years is hard to reverse.

My advice is to make sure you stretch after running. Make sure to hit the calves really well. Also I try to do some calf stretches at my desk. Just pull your toes back and hold for a minute. I try to just keep doing this back and forth from leg to leg for a 10 min. I try to do it a few times per day.

It's better to start now before they get too tight!!!!
