RUNNING!!!

Well my fellow MFPers, I've looked so forward to writing this post.

Last year I lost 50lbs. This year I've been maintaining (between heavy training for running that left me having to chose between being fueled for workouts or still losing weight and also a bit of complacency).

Last October I decided I'd give one last shot to running after someone on my board started the Couch to 5k program. I'd always wanted to run, always tried to run but was always unable because I'd go too hard, hurt my legs and think all runners were crazy. I decided I'd put my pride aside and follow the C 2 5k and take it slow. I noticed very quickly that my legs were adjusting to running. I stopped running over the holidays (and didn't complete the c25k) but had signed up for a 5k in March. I ran the 5k pushing my kids in a double stroller and it felt great. I finished in just over 1/2 an hour. I thought with that result, maybe I'd be able to train for the 10k that was happening at the end of April. Well, I didn't get as much training in as I'd have liked but I did manage to run the 10k in just under 1 hour and the very next day I decided I'd register myself for the half marathon in the fall.

I joined the Running Room for a training program and, to my complete joy and pride, I finished my first half marathon on Sunday with a smile on my face and feeling STRONG. I ran it in 2:09:44 and felt great!

18 months ago before starting this journey I would not have believed I would ever be capable of doing this. And you know what? I am already looking forward to the January 5th start of training for the Vancouver Half Marathon in the spring.

Wow!!! Congratulations and great job. You're an inspiration to me. I'm 54 and have just started running. I'm planning on doing my very first 5K run on October 31, at my ripe old age. Hopefully, I'll survive. Not sure if I'm ready yet, but my goal will be to finish it and not worry about the time. I'm getting both nervous and excited about doing it. It's nothing compared to your accomplishments. I'll glady take any pointers that you might have, especially for someone doing their first 5k. Congratulations again!!!!

That is so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!  :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
It does get under your skin! I have actually tried giving it up a couple of times, especially last year when I hurt my foot, but I am addicted to it! It's not a bad thing to be addicted to as far as I am concerned!

Congrats on taking it on!! Running is a beautiful sport and part of that is that it's all about you. So you can honour your body and your needs!

No matter how long or short the race, recreational runners start too fast. The start of a race is very exciting and it's easy to get sucked in to "keeping up" with the people around you. But even in my 5k I reminded myself to just take it easy at the start and let my body warm up a little before pushing myself more, and I passed almost everyone who had initially passed me. They were exhausted and winded but I felt great because I hadn't used up all my energy in the first 1.5kms. I've come to feel strongly that I would rather finish a race strong than to start it off fast. I am never going to be an Olympic runner so, although I know I'll still have time goals and want to achieve personal bests, my primary goal will continue to be finishing the race feeling happy and wanting to do it again.

You will feel amazing after you finish your race, and as long as you race within yourself and not led by the people around you, you'll feel great!! Good luck!

I haven't found one yet - probably early Spring - I'll finish my program in December (subject to following it as it is and not repeating any weeks)...I've only got this month planned out to run so far - I ran my first 5k on Oct 3, second is this Saturday and 3rd on Halloween. I am not a fast runner and don't know if I ever will be - it's not about time for me it's about the fact that I can do it...period! I think back to my mindset a yearago and I would have cringed at the thought of even a 5k!

I'm begginning to see how addicting running can be. I'm begginning to look forward to my C25K running sessions more than my weight training. Which if you would have told me that in Janurary I would have laughed at you.

The C25K is an amazing program for bringing new runners along.

Congrats on the success. I'm trying to get there. I'm going to knock out a 5K before Christmas, I'm just not sure which one yet.

Out of curiosity, is the C25K a free program?

Yep, just google Couch to 5k and it will come up. You just follow it along. There are even free podcasts you can download with timed music etc to match up to your week so you can run outdoors without consulting your watch every few seconds!

Congratulations and thank you for the inspiring post PedalHound! I recently finished the c25k. I'll be 56 on November 7 and plan to run my very first 5k on November 28. What an amazing late birthday present to myself that will be. And what a great inspiration you are to so many people. Again congratulations and thank you. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

Congratulations! Some great times too :)

I started the C25K in Feb at 213lbs (97kg) and I'm now down to 156lbs (71kg) and a huge part of that has been my new found addiction to running. I've done three 5K races so far, improving each time. It feels great to be a runner after never thinking I'd be able to do it. Now I feel weird if I don't go for a run during the day. I'm more excited by my weight-loss because it means I can run faster! I just love the running!

How wonderful to hear these stories!! And osmium, I agree - one of the factors that has refreshed my motivation to lose the last half of my weight is that I'll see the improvement in my running!
