Home Exercises?

For starters I'm not fat fat, just feeling a bit chubby. i'm looking to lose about 17lbs :)

I do not have transportation to go out any where to exercise ( gym, pool, etc) Nor do i have money for equipment at home..and I have no training Bra to jog ( and that is NOT comfortable with a D cup and a normal bra haha.) But what I DO have is a nice woodsy road area that I can walk along. I was thinking of doing that for 30 mins every day after dinner. Do you think that is enough? Should I do it longer or more often? Also, o you guys know any other exercises I can do without going out/ buying equipment?

Also, If I want to lose weight, would doing sit ups and stuff make me weigh more? I know muscle weighs more than fat..but i'm not sure how much it would effect it.. Would doing those types of exercises help me lose fat even though its muscle building exercises? Also, how would muscle gain effect BMI? That kinda confuses me.. What if you are really buff and stuff and your BMI is high because of the muscle weight? Or does it to effect it that much?

ahh so many questions. I'm such a newbie. ;) Sorry 'bout that.

    That is a good start!
Use water bottles or cans or soup (or anything else) to "lift weights" and also to walk with you on your walk.

I've heard that this site has some exercises that you can do from home:
    http://www.bodyrock.tv/category/daily-workouts/
    Body Rock TV :)
One of my friends uses it, I haven't gotten into it though.

Exercise DVDs are (relatively) cheap too. I like dance ones ... they are fun too!

Go to the local library and check out some workout DVDs and see how they work for you. It gives you an opportunity to try a number of different workouts and settle on what you like and what works. Also, the variety keeps it from getting boring. If none of them are exactly what you want, then you can take different parts of the various exercise workouts and make your own.

It also works well to see what DVDs are available and then look them up on Amazon or ask about them here to see whether they are considered effective and safe workouts, whether the instructor seems to know what he/she is doing and how to instruct properly, etc. My library has a website where I can go and see what's available in all the county libraries and put a hold on any DVDs I want from any of the county libraries and have them ready to pick up at my local library. That way I can see what's available, check out the information on the DVD, then request it so I can try it out.
  • Our corporate trainer advised me to add strength on alternate days: warm up for 5 minutes (walking or moving body in general) the lunges (12 each leg) tricep dips (12); bicycle crunches (12) then 20 jumping jacks; wall sit (30 seconds to 2 minutes) push ups (12) plank (30 seconds-2 minutes) then 20 more jumping jacks) repeat if you can and then build on it until you can repeat. This strengthens your whole body without any equipment.

On walking days, do some intervals of short jogs for 30 seconds or what you can handle, to ratchet up the burn.

In no particular order, these are my favorites:

    Squats
    Lunges
Squat Jumps (great for a cardio boost!)
    Push ups
    Body holds (a.k.a plank position)
    Step ups
    Leg lifts
    Burpees (also great for cardio)
Yoga (lots of online videos. check out Tara Stiles on youtube)

If you are up to a challenge you can try one of these programs:
    http://www.twohundredsquats.com
    http://www.hundredpushups.com

A lot of MFPers are into workout videos. You can try some out on Netflix or your local video rental store).

    Walking/running is also great!

    Good luck!

I love the workouts on www.fitnessblender.com. They have hundreds of different workout videos you can do, many of them without any equipment or weights.
You can pick different levels of difficulty (1-5), and different lengths of time, depending on how much time you have to workout.
You can also pick if you want to do strength or cardio or yoga, etc. :) It's also free, which is great when you're just starting and you're not sure what types of exercise you want to do :)

    Good luck :)

Also, in terms of exercise duration, it is really up to you, your long term goals and your current ability. People who have a lot of weight to lose can easily lose weight without incorporating exercise. Now that I am getting close to my goal, I really need the exercise to keep my metabolism up. Personally, I just like the feeling of sore muscles because I feel more accomplished. I also like the added benefit of being able to eat more food!

You will figure out what is best for you as you go along. It seems like you're planning on taking it easy, which is good. Whenever I am getting into a routine I tend to burn myself out a few weeks in!
