I have been on my weight loss journey for 7 months now and decided to put my dog on a diet also. I would like help finding out his BMR and TDEE. Do I follow the same process as I did to find mine? Also, where can I find nutritional facts on dog food. I would like to start keeping track of his calories and carb intake here on MFP. I also have a HRM with a chest strap. I tried it on my dog, the chest strap fit perfectly. Do you think I should have him eat back his calories? Do dogs go into starvation mode as well? I know alot of you guys on here really know your stuff so any help with this would be greatly appreciated. His stats are below....
Breed : Chihuahua
Weight: 15lbs
Length: 12 inches
Age : 1 year 2 months
Activity Level: 1 15 min walk per day

I am seriously suggesting you talk to your Vet about this matter.0

I was hoping there'd be a vet on mfp, people on mfp know everything0

You say he's 12 inches but only goes for 15 minutes?0
-
Maybe your dog doesnt want to go on a diet, you ever think about asking him first before you just make that desicion for him?0

I spoke to him about this over a nice big bowl of kibbles n bits....He wants to be like his master.0 -
I am also the owner of a formerly chubby dog. Your vet would be the best starting place. The only advice I can give in this area (the advice given to me by my veterinarian) is to split the food up into 2 or 3 servings a day instead of one big meal once a day to help the metabolism. Also, the activity level seems a little low. Most breeds need 30-45 minutes of walking a day. My dog's vet said those are the two universal dog health rules. Hope that helps!0

Aww thanks but I thought that breaking up your meals and eating multiple times a day was just "bro science"?0 -

What? I thought it was scientific studies conducted on men with fake tans in tight shirts with popped collars.0 -

Girl he's pretty small I could just use a magnum condom and stuff him in that.0 -
It was advice from a veterinarian! Kinda figured all those degrees on the wall meant she knew what she was talking about. My mistake. :happy:0

Well I guess someone in this house better start eating clean, I thought clean eating meant just washing your hands before you eat. Thanks for the info!0 -
Okay...
I have a dog who was very heavy. His stomach almost hit the floor. He is short legged. I did put him on a diet of sorts - eating plan - that did wonders for him - without a Vet's help.
I divided his food up into portions, which was and still is Blue Buffalo kibble, where I was feeding him twice a day what he would be taking in for 10% less than what was dictated for what amount was keeping him at his weight. I watched his weight drop slowly which is what you want so not to stress the animal from too much of a weight loss all at once. I then added a meaty canned dog food from the same brand in place of the kibble at dinner - measured. As time went on I gradually decreased his portion size until he is where he is now with his tummy up where it belongs. I want to emphasis that I did this very slowly with him as he is an older dog. I don't do any extra exercise with him because it makes his bad knee limp.
I want to add that this dog had previously been on self feed but obviously that did not work with him.0 -
does that mean you don't wash your hands now ....0

Great advice! I agree slow and steady. I don't want my dog losing muscle and ending up with loose saggy skin!0
