Hi, So I am pretty new to mfp, well kinda. I just started it for my 2nd time around, I have been logging for a week now and started 30 DS on Sunday. I was so excited to weigh in today for the first time since I started back as I have been slightly under my calories every day and I have worked out every day (20 min. run/walk a day before I started 30 DS). To my dismay though I gained 3 lbs since my last weigh in. I don't know what I have done wrong. Does anybody have any insight? I don't feel heavier, I don't look heavier. Do you think it could be muscle weight? Please help I don't want to feel this down only one week into my transformation!

30DS is a brutal workout. It's most likely water weight, as your muscles retain water while recovering. I've been known to hold on to 7-10# of water after a long bike ride and it takes 4-5 days for it to go away. Once it does tho, I see the actual weight loss that hasn't been so evident beneath the temporary increase due to water. Stick with it, you'll be fine :)

I think weight gain in the first week is a fairly common experience. I know that I haven't lose a single iota since starting 11 days ago - however I have lost inches everywhere which is far more encouraging than numbers of a scale. Break out your tape measure and track your progress this way until you have finished the 30DS and ignore your scales for the time being.

I held on to water like crazy when I started (and I was eating clean and working out like crazy!). Once a week or so went by the scale started moving big time. Don't give up. I know it will move for you too :) Don't forget to take measurements. They kept me sane and not disappointed when the scale said nothing.

    Don't give up hope - it's normal.

Someone has written a wonderful, detailed post on all the what and why of it, but I failed to bookmark the link for reference to questions like this.

The short version: It's perfectly normal for some initial weight gain when introducing a new exercise regimen. The new forms of physical activity can throw things off a bit. Give it some time, and stick to smart food choices and exercise.

I'd also suggest spacing out visits to the scale (daily check-ins can be frustrating with normal body fluctuations). Personally, I keep my weigh-ins down to every week or two unless I'm about to run a race (I like more accurate calorie burn calculations).

A lot of people get frustrated with the initial speed bumps and never make it far enough to start seeing the results. MFP has a great social community with support and information on all sorts of exercise programs and dietary tips and suggestions. Stick it out past this initial physical adjustment and you'll likely see results more to your liking.

Others will likely have information that's a lot more insightful and technical - I'm mostly paraphrasing.

Stick to it! And welcome back!

Thank you for the positive feedback, I think i will break out the measuring tape- i've always relied mainly on the scale but with working out I think the inches will be the best feedback. I feel good though, I mean I feel muscles that I haven't felt for a long time- and although it hurts it feels good to feel those muscles. I am gonna keep pushing, keep tracking, and keep drinking lots of water. Who knows maybe I will have one of those awesome weigh-ins where I drop a whole bunch...

    just keep going w/what u r doing....

30-day shred is more about losing inches than pounds.

i'm doing it for the 2nd time around now - haven't taken measurements yet, starting level 1 today (just completed level 2). i'm changing things up a bite since doing this already.

also, u need to build muscle to burn fat - so, the weight gain could be some muscle build too. you'll see a difference at the end of the 30-days. don't do another weigh-in until u've completed the 30 days and make sure u take ur measurements then too.

    good luck and keep going.
