I'm loving my fitness pal and have realised I have too much protein in my diet. Does anyone know what effect on weight loss this would have? I'm supposed to take 45g but I'm often more like 60g per day. Do I need to do more excercise or should I cut back on calories? I know protein helps you stay full longer and it helps me as I have low blood sugar too.

I eat 120 g protein and in fact it helped me a lot with my weightloss. If I only eat protein and no carbs (like atikins) my side-effects are constipation, bloated stomach etc. Have to eat some carbs.

To cause health problems, you'd have to consume a ridiculous amount of protein. Firstly, a quarter of the protein is used for consumption and metabolism by the body and what's left is either helps muscle fibres or used as energy depending on what and how you exercise.

Also, any excess is secreted naturally and you'd have to be consuming a lot more than 15g in excess, so don't worry about it.

MFP's protein goal is very low, only 15% of your daily calories. It's more of a minimum goal rather than a maximum goal. Aim to hit it or go over it, not stay under it.

Personally, I aim for at least 25% of my calories from protein, typically around 110 or more grams a day.
