Anyone else work with/around food?

I've worked in a grocery store or in a deli pretty much my entire adult life so far. I'm finally getting ahold of myself, and changing my way of life. I'm doing surprisingly well given that I handle delicious food all day. Hit the gym for at least 20 minutes on the tredmill, and after a 11 hr shift, I try to get back after work (but that's only happened once so far).
Anyway, does anyone have any "tricks" not to get sucked back to eating the deli foods that can so easily put me back onto the wrong path again? I've been into this diet (change of life) for a little over a month and a half now, and i'm doing well, but the urge to eat poorly is around every corner at work!

Boy do I know this story.I used to work in a Mexican restaurant for 4 years.the thing really available to snack on was the fattening chips for chips and salsa. I thought how the heck am I going to lose weight here? Mexican food is kinda a weakness with cheese being the primary guilty criminal. So when I did start my fitness pal I asked for the nutrition list and began picking three healthier choices when I was hungry.even if I had to buy it.I figured to buy my way into a healthy figure is better than freely eating my way into obesity. So time goes in with the healthy eating and I lost 25 pounds.it was so much easier than I thought.the chefs knew I was trying and helped me out with a kids half chicken breast for lunch when they saw I was serious.so eventually that became my life style while I worked there.however when I sustopped working there I gained everything back because I didn't have allthose tools readily accessibleble to me any more.anyway I hope this helped.good luck0

I am a waitress in a truck stop, yummy breakfasts everywhere!
What I have to do is bring a lunch every day full of healthy snacks. I keep a container of fruit on the counter at all times and am constantly picking at it but it seem to help me resist all the junk that I am serving. Just keep low cal, healthy snacks within your reach and see how that goes.
Good luck!0 -

I know your pain. I work in a convenience store and its temptation no matter where I look!!! I had one friend (who is also over weight) tell me I needed will power. Try standing in the store for 6 to 8 hours staring at every temptation that has gotten you where you are today. My "trick" is to bring LOTS of healthy snacks. Lots of fruit, a chocolate pudding for those chocolate cravings, granola bar, cut up veggies. I figure even if I go over on my calories if they are all healthy calories then I am still winning. I also dont deny my self. At least once a week I have some sort of treat but try to make it fit into my calories and fat. I look forward to it and know that even with the treats I am still losing weight because I am eating them in moderation. Nuts would be another good snack but both my kids have peanut and tree nut allergies so they are not an option for me. Good luck!!!!!

It is hard for me too. We own Mediterenian restaurant and my husband and I are chefs.
I make every other day baklavas, cheese/meat/ spinach pies, bread rolls and so on.
When I had enough and started counting calories I am resisting all of it.
I do have a bite to make sure it is yummi but no more.
Easier said then done but I watch during the week and on weekends go over calories but am very strict not to over do it.
My safest choice is chicken gyros/shwarma or salad.
I want this so bad that I really don't think about all the yummi food.
Hope this helps0 -
Yes, it's so hard! I work at a Dunkin donuts... While I don't eat the donuts much anymore(just the occasional munchkin... And I've stopped mostly because I was amazed at how small the munchkin was and how many calories it is.) bagels and breads are my real weakness! I've started bringing my own breakfasts, and making sure I stay busy so I'm not mindlessly munching. But mostly, the healthy food is the best thing to help0

Thanks everyone, in a weird way, i'm glad to see that i'm not alone on this hehe. It's really hard when I have to bake some breaded chicken, the smell from the chicken drives me bananas! When I get a minute afterwards, I try to grab a banana or a low fat yogurt. That's what's keeping me in line as of now, but I don't know how long this will last. UGh!0

I work as a waitress on weekends and some evenings, never a whole day though. Sunday lunch is the worst, there are always piles of fluffy Yorkshire h puddings and the most amazing cauliflower cheese left over, which h we're allowed to pick at while we clean up. So far, I've resisted temptation, but if we ever had deserts left over, I'd be on that lemon tart in a heartbeat!0

I'm not sure if anyone is familiar with this but I live in Canada and work at Tim Horton's. Similar to Dunkin's or Robin's. I've worked there for 14 years now. It sucks to put it bluntly. Donuts, timbits, cookies all within arms reach. The healthy stuff takes too long to make ( 30 secs ) I'm a manager so I rarely get time to sit and eat, it's always while I'm doing something else, i.e. counting a till, doing dishes or doing something else out back. I still eat somethings sometimes but I know what I can have and what I shouldn't ( even though that's 99% of the food. lol ) But one bonus is, is that I'm usually running around all day burning calories. It won't be until I can afford to get a FitBit to really see what I can burn in 10 hours.
Will Power and motivation to lose this excess crap on my body helps me stay away from the bad stuff the majority of the time.
Good Luck to everyone in the Food Industry0 -

I know Tim Hortons. Mmm, Timbits. Luckily I only get them 2 or 3 times a year (my Canadian friends always bring me some from the airport branches) and they're evil! I could eat a full dozen in one sitting.
I empathise, being surrounded by timbits all day must be tough.0 -
