Does protein cause water retention? I ate a lot of protein yesterday and magically gained 1.5 lbs overnight

The short answer is yes. Amino acids derived from protein can be converted into glucose via gluconeogenesis. Glucose that is stored as glycogen attaches to 3-4 grams of water. For example if you eat 50 g of carbohydrate you will hold onto 150-200 g of water. However, unless you are eating a low carbohydrate diet, are in a caloric deficit, or taking in a large amount of protein, protein intake will not have a significant effect on water retention.0
