Does protein cause water retention? I ate a lot of protein yesterday and magically gained 1.5 lbs overnight

I don't think so....how much protein? Probably water weight....I'd make sure to drink a lot of water today....0

The short answer is yes. Amino acids derived from protein can be converted into glucose via gluconeogenesis. Glucose that is stored as glycogen attaches to 3-4 grams of water. For example if you eat 50 g of carbohydrate you will hold onto 150-200 g of water. However, unless you are eating a low carbohydrate diet, are in a caloric deficit, or taking in a large amount of protein, protein intake will not have a significant effect on water retention.0
