Does smoking slow down weight loss?

Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone had any scientific research on this. Does smoking slow weight loss?
I know that if you don't smoke, you find it easier to catch your breath so you can exercise harder and for longer. But does smoking slow down your metabolism? Does it make it harder to shift weight than if you did everything exactly the same except smoke / not smoke.
Thanks in advance lovelies

One thing it doesn't slow for sure is an early date with the grim reaper.0

From what I've read it does the opposite. But, the health benefits of quitting smoking far outweigh anything else. It's a lot easier to exercise if you don't and therefore productivity should go up.0

I probably should have added that I myself don't smoke. I'm a science teacher and a few of the pupils were asking me during a "balanced diet and weight loss" lesson.
Balanced arguments would be great, and not just "don't smoke"

Smoking is great for weight loss. It's a natural appetite suppressant and mood enhancer. It raises your heart rate and your metabolism.
But yeah, it'll kill you. I quit recently because I wanted my body focused 1000% on losing weight and getting healthy, not on cleaning crap out of my system every few hours (although I know it is busy cleaning up crap from years of smoking and overeating).0 -
Interesting ideas!!!!0

I think indirectly it does, because you can't exercise as hard. However, I quit smoking and either way it didn't appear to have any effect on my weight, I neither gained nor lost when I quit. Most people gain, but a few pounds is nothing compared to a healthier life.0

It does not slow down weight loss except by making it more difficult to work out. Some people can run all day and still be smokers, other people like me cannot. It can also act as an appetite suppressant, but if you aren't working out you aren't really that healthy anyway.0

It will actually help you lose weight if anything. Nicotine is a stimulant and appetite suppressant.
You can quit though and not gain weight. I've quit twice, first time I gained 20lbs from shoveling chocolate into my face every time I wanted to smoke. The second time I gained nothing because I was smart and took a walk instead.0 -

I presume you already know the answer to that question just seeing what others think.0 -
someone was planning to test it out

"Obese smokers gain most weight on quitting smoking, while obese continuing smokers are likely to remain stable or lose weight. Obese quitters have the greatest need for interventions to ameliorate weight gain."0 -

LMAO...Fo SURE! I have noticed that there are many posts about smoking and wt loss, in kind of a "positive' way. Is it because there are more younger people or that there are more Ignorant people? Who would even have smoking as an "option" to enhance wt. loss other than the someone who is REALLY Lost.0 -
I quit and gained weight, but I know I'm healthier without smoking. I do breathe much better during cardio too. Even though I smoked, worked out, and was considerably smaller, I'd still rather be healthier and a little bigger. Just my opinion. Oh, and smoking is bad for circulation!0

You would have to smoke about 21 cigarettes to burn an extra 14-16 calories during the day. I'm an occasional smoker (wah) and I know it goes against health code and my college course but it does suppress cravings and stop me reaching for copious amounts of sweet delicious CAKE0

I don't know about the weight loss part but I do know it slows down healing time. For example a friend of mine broke her arm and it wouldn't heal, she was in a cast for nearly 6 months. So I told her to stop smoking (because of what I had learned in college that year) and her arm healed very quickly after quitting smoking.
Also, I work in the dental field, remind those kids that oral cancer is usually painless and can spread to the rest of the body very rapidly due to the lymph tissue under the tongue, once cancer gets to your lymph tissue it gets in your blood basically immediately, which means it can spread everywhere, and it does spread everywhere. My cousin had bone cancer (and multiple other organ cancer) due to chewing tobacco. He nearly died twice. and now he is constantly battling new cancer, mainly of his lip. It is very disfiguring and it's hard to eat when your missing most of your lower lip. He's in his 50's now but his issues with cancer started over 10 years ago.0 -
depends on what you are smoking.
If you want to smoke something to help you lose weight- maybe crack cocaine. It might kill you faster than nicotine, but you will probably have a skinny corpse.
I hear that getting cancer can help you lose weight, too.
Sorry... just can't wrap my head around wanting to consume something that you know is a killer in order to lose weight. It is hard for me to accept... it just feels very sad to me.0 -
A few ideas from a smoker
Smoking is like any other drug it has a lifestyle attached to it. It is not jus the nicotine that smokers become addicted to it is the ritual. This involves lighting up at certain times of the day and that last one before bed and for smokers who smoke roll ups it is the rolling and making of the cigarette as well. These rituals are almost as addictive as the nicotine itself and very hard to break.
As far as weight loss is concerned as other posters have said, some people put on weight when the quit. I can usually look forward at least 7lbs in the first two weeks alone, but this is usually because they substitute food for the cigarette. The hardest time is after a meal. Most smokers use having a cigarette to "end" the meal and so if they don't have their "fix" then the meal doesn't feel over and so they continue to eat longer. Also snacking when the cravings hit adds to weight gain.
On the upside if a smoker can quit and begin excercising they can excercise longer and more easily without all the gunk in their lungs so they can lose weight when the quit.
I have given up several times (one day it will be for the last time) I keep trying. But like with emotional eating I am an emotional smoker any stress or upset and I reach for the cigarettes.
The best thing you can do for yourself is quit cigarettes they are evil, really evil, and I personally think they should be banned completely. If they were, giving up would be so much easier it is due to the availability that makes it harder for me. I go to buy petrol or milk and there they are behind the counter. You would not find me down a dark alley trying to score *kitten* if they were illegal that's for sure.
I hate that I smoke and I hate myself for being so weak. I try and try I even lasted for 2 years once but then my dad died and I was straight back on them again.
When I started it was the norm, everyone I knew smoked. No one knew the dangers and doctors even recommended it for stress. What I can't understand is why young people are still taking it up even though they have all the information and are aware of the dangers. We were ignorant but young people today are not and yet they still get hooked on cigarettes so sad.0 -
Whats the point of being on here and trying to be healthy if you're still going to smoke? I had no choice but to quit 3 years ago. Doc said I had less than 50% lung capacity. I was heading to an early grave. If you want to lose weight and keep enjoying the life you have and doing things you like doing like smoking...lets just say if you keep smoking you wont have a life to live.0

That's dumb. A thin smoker is going to live longer and healthier than a fat one. Health is cumulative. Smoking isn't an automatic death sentence.0 -
Interesting ideas guys,
I assumed that the posts that were posted, would have been posted, and I was right.
Thanks for your feedback!
And good luck to anyone trying to quit!!!
