My HRM just died and I need to buy a new one. I've had that one for a few years. Any suggestions on what type of new one I should get (brand, model, etc)? I know I want one with a chest strap...

    Polar FT4. I got mine two years ago and just had to change the battery recently. You can do it yourself, and the battery only costs $5. It is pretty much the most basic model right now. All I need it for is to check on my heart rate and to see how many calories I burn, so it works perfectly for me. I bought it for like $100ish, but I believe that it has dropped down to about $60ish now.

    Polar is one of the top brands. I have an FT7, though I may upgrade at some point to a model that does a fitness test.

    Polar FT4 is what I have too! Bought it for $60 a few months ago on the web.

    I have the Polar FT40 and I love it. It does the heart rate, calories, and has the fitness test. It was a gift from my hubby so I'm not positive about the cost - I know it is a bit more expensive that the FT4. Polar is definitely a good name in HRM's.

    I have a Polar RS300X. It's a couple of years old, and I changed the battery on the watch and the strap myself. However, changing the batteries yourself is going to void your warranty, so if you do it, do so carefully. I had it for several years before I changed the battery, but it was only used daily for a few months.

    Mine has held up pretty well, but I do have to get my strap and the transmitter wet before I put it on or it won't read consistently.

    **corrected for the model number...thought I had an FT7, but looks like mine is an older model RS300X**

    I had the polar FT7 and changed the battery out on the watch but I think the battery in the strap died and I can't get the battery compartment open...

    I used a nickel to turn the cover and an eyeglass flat head screwdriver to pop the battery out.

    I used coins and a key to try to get it open lol....maybe I need to get someone stronger to try :)

    i'm in the same boat as OP. i had a polar F6 for 4 years and the battery finally gave out on me. looking for a replacement. i've narrowed it down to FT4 or FT7.

    i just need it for heart rate reading and calories burned, so might just stick with FT4 since its like $20 cheaper.

    Only thing I really don't like about the newer polars (this was my second one) is that the transmitter sticks out of the chest strap. sometimes makes it awkward with sports bras and stuff
