Pain in shins when walking.

Hi, I have been walking quite a bit recently and I started noticing some pain on my shins last week. I thought it would go away but it hasn't and now its a bit more. It feels like i have a bruce in it or something. I do karate, hike and walk alot. When i do everything else it doesnt hurt but hiking and walking do. I haven't gotten injured there, and I was just wondering if anyone else on mfp has had that happen to them before and what they did for it. someone told me i could have split my chins, but im not sure. I have upped my calorie intake because of course to recover u need fuel(my excuse to eat a bit more) and protein as well and am taking it easy.

Sounds like shin splints, when i started to run on a treadmill i had to stop due to pain in my shins, it ended up that i went to have my gait analysis done in a specialist running store where it was discovered i pronate when walking / running
Ended up with arch support running shoes that fixed the problem

Happens all the time. Might need better shoes, heavier hiking boots / shoes can cause pressure... bad posture etc.0 -

Do you have athletes foot where you are? They fit print your foot and tell you what sort of shoes you need0

If it was shin splints. you so would know it. You wouldn be able to walk very well afterwards. Its most likely just tight calfs, carrying too much weight, bad shoes, or heal striking. Its nothing to worry about unless you actually do get Shin Splints.0

I get this pain in my shins too and so have stopped running. Haven't run for about 4 weeks now but it's still there, even if I just do a bit of jumping about or a fast walk. It's annoying as it's just not getting any better. I found this, which might help you?

Used to have this problem when walking but not running on a track... Not a problem on the treadmill which is where I cardio 99% of the time now.0

I had, what we thought was shin splints. After 15+ years of no exercise and pain when walking any distance it was discovered I had anterior compartment syndrome ( in both legs ). By then I'd seen two physios, a podiatrist and two consultant orthopaedic specialists.
Fingers crossed that it doesn't take you that long to get yourself sorted. Definitely the best place to start is a good sports shop that will help you find the right footwear and if that doesn't work, see a specialist.

i doubt it's shin splints, but more likely compartment syndrome where the muscles of your lower legs are confined to a sheath, and as you exercise, the muscle swells too much for the sheath size.
i get it too, and if i stop and rest for a couple of minutes (sittting down preferably) and let it pass, when i carry on it's much better. if it comes on again, stop and let it pass again. after a couple of times, it doesn't come back at all.

I'm the same. I'm fine when I hike but fast walking on the flat and running both give me dreadful shin pain. The tip to walk up and down on your tip toes and then on your heels really does work when my shins are sore! Stretching out after exercise is so important.0 -
I would have to say shin splints also. I had the same issue myself. I got a good pair of inserts for my shoes and made it a lot better.0
