Those following a no gluten/no dairy diet

Just thought I'd throw this out there, as I'm sure there's a few of you doing this too!

I gave up gluten about 5 months ago, and felt substantially better. I've been noticing lately, too much diary in my diet causes negative effects. I've been experimenting with it, and if I consume too much, I get extremely itchy skin, headache, runny/stuffed nose, sneezing etc. At any rate, I've decided to cancel it out of my diet and see what happens.

I'd like to hear of any others who have decided to do this as well.

I avoid dairy as it exacerbates my acne.

I cannot have dairy, it gives me horrible stomach "problems." We originally discovered it when I was breastfeeding my newborn son. He had horrible diarrhea and acne; the pediatrician told me to cut the dairy out of my diet. He started gaining weight, his skin cleared up, and I felt better!

I have since found (6 years later) that I can have low fat / fat free dairy without consequence. I believe my problem is with the proteins found in high-fat dairy (ice cream, cheeses, butter). If you are not able to cope without dairy, then try low fat.

Also, be careful of soy milk. A lot of products already have soy in them and, like all things; soy should be enjoyed in moderation. I love almond milk for smoothies, cereal, coffee, etc. There have been a few discussions lately on non-dairy substitutes that have great suggestions.

Good luck, once you've done with it for a while you won't miss it as much! Although I would still kill for a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard or a Cold Stone Creamery bowl of chocolate ice cream every once in a while!

I know what you mean! I usually get massive cravings for ice cream, and feel terrible later. Henceforth my problems now - I went on a major dairy spree (ice cream, yogurt, etc) last week.

Dairy and gluten are not my friends at all. So far, I'm feeling better and my skin definitely looks better (eczema is aggravated by dairy in my case).

bump, I've recently decreased my gluten intake, I think it gives my tummy issues (at first I thought it was dairy). This is my second week so I'm up for suggestions.

No gluten or dairy here...was diagnosed with celiacs PLUS gluten allergy PLUS milk allergy/intolerance about 7 years ago. I think the thing I miss the most is chocolate. Most of the time you can find non dairy replacement stuff (even ice cream) but there is no "non diary chocolate" Stick with it--if not eating gluten/dairy makes you feel better you will be happy that you stuck with it.

I use almond milk and coconut milk sometimes, but that's about it. I don't need a replacement per se, it just works well in smoothies.

I was taken off of both as well as other things by my naturopath about 6 months ago. I had hives for 2 months, my GP couldn't help me so I went to a naturopath, did a food panel blood test, took the big offenders out of my diet and now.... no hives

Next march I can start having most of the things in moderation but Dairy, Soy, Pineapple, Kidney Beans are all out for good.

*My mom is a bit flakey and even after 2 months of hives and me starting to look at food intolerances she neglected to mention that as a kid I was intolerant to dairy, lol. would have made things go a bit smoother.

For sure there is non dairy chocolate! I have a dairy free chocolate bar sitting in the fridge right now, and I bake with dairy free chocolate chips all the time. The ingredients are cocoa mass, cocoa butter (not a dairy product) and brown sugar. Its delicious. My son can't have dairy, so we did a lot of research on this to find him something he can have so hes not left out.

Sigh... glad it's not just my mom. Why do they do this stuff??

My GI doc told me that my diet had nothing to do with my IBS-- which is when I stopped seeing him and started seeing my naturopath, who had me redo my elimination diet, found the Hashimoto's and helped me figure out what's screwing me up.

    There is!!!

Look into the brand "Enjoy Life" I buy their chocolate chips to snack on. Free from dairy, soy, gluten, nuts.
I would never deny myself chocolate!

I think Enjoy Life makes a dairy free chocolate, but I must warn you, it's not like the real thing. It's not terrible, just not like milk chocolate. I like to use it when baking.

Holy cow, we all jumped on the Enjoy Life chocolate! :)

I actually think it tastes great, but I'm partial to darker chocolates not milk chocolates, maybe that's why?
  • I like dark chocolate, too. I don't know, maybe it's a mental thing for me because I know it's "different". It's great in baked goods.

I went back to dairy after substituting it with soy. My acne got much worse. I love soy yogurt but tend to eat it every day with cereal and fruit...and eating an overabundance of soy isn't good for you either. #damnedifyoudoordon't

Have you tried coconut milk yogurt? That's what I eat now. The blueberry So Delicious one is quite good. I use the vanila one with frozen berries too.
