Hi All, Anyone on the horrible drug Cortisone? I am 42 and have a horrible Autoimmune disease where I have to take high dosages of cortisone to stay alive. But with the side effects of this drug I have gained lots of weight. I am way over my recommended weight. Now I have to try to lose it with the slow reduction of the drug. It is a struggle, but I am going to try. I need to lose in the start 30 pounds. At least that is my goal for now.

    Hi and welcome to MFP

There are lots of people here struggling with weight gained in part due to medications, it's certainly a challenge! But that's why most of us are here, we enjoy the challenge and attack it like an army from Sparta!

Track everyday here and hopefully you will see good steady results!

I've had to do cortisone a few times. It's terrible for weight!

There's a prednisone group here. They'd be a great support for you (and a good place to find some friends).

    Good luck!

You know a friend of mine has an autoimmune disease that she also needed cortisone for. She told me that regardles of how active she was, the water weight induced by the drug made it nearly impossible for her to get to her ideal weight. The good news is that once she stopped taking it , the weight just fell off. So yours is going to come off also!

Yes the water weight does go when you go off, but unfortunately the weight in fat you gain doesn't come off as easily. When I got down to 8 mg it was better but I had a flare and was upped the dosage again. So on came the weight on top of the weight that was there from the previous high dosages it is a vicious cycle. I hope that I will be able to get off it and we keep trying but so far no success. I have been on it for 10 years, without a break. But I am going to try my best and get off what I can, tone my muscles that need it and try to have a healthy structure under the water weight so when I do reduce and lose the water I will be lean and mean. LOL Well we will see.
