So I started keeping an eye on my sugar intake 36grams daily ( I write it down to account for it) but I notice something called sugar alcohol. Google explains it as "what gives certain flavor to most stuff"...i.e sugar free. For example...today I looked into sugar free syrup...cool "0" sugar but the sugar alcohol was 13grams per serv...almost half my allowance. Does anyone know do I account for this (sugar alocohol) in my daily allowance?

I guess it depends on why you're trying to track your sugars. I say that because the ADA has suggestions on how to track sugar alcohols: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/sugar-alcohols.html

If you're not diabetic and you're counting your sugars for some other reason, I don't know what to tell you.

A good book I would recommend is "The new glucose revolution" there is a lot of mystery surrounding sugars, this book goes a long way to expelling some of the myths.

To some extent it depends *which* sugar alcohol.

Generally they're a con, they are carbohydrates and many of them are absorbed like any other carb. A couple of them aren't absorbed. http://www.mendosa.com/netcarbs.htm
