Alright, veterans. There are a lot of us who keep answering the same questions. . .like
"does this work?" "should I eat all of my calories?" and that batch.
Here's the deal:
If you've followed the plan here on MFP, and lost weight, please tell a brief version of your story in this thread.
Maybe it will strengthen the argument if we just put our success where our mouths are!
Here's my deal:
When I first started here at MFP, I was seriously undereating. When I finally decided to trust the system, I met my goal. In fact, I've lost two more pounds on maintenance calories, and I'm trying to up my calories gradually to maintain. I eat every last calorie I'm given. I am never hungry.
Success stories, testify!:flowerforyou:

WOO LAWD!!! Here go my testification!
(I was going to write this entire thing like that, but after careful consideration aka being lazy, I have decided not to persue that. Lucky for us all. )
When I started a month or so back, I had lost about 65 pounds on my own, and had plateaued for almost a month. Knowing I had 10 more pounds to go, it was driving me crazy. I searched for how to break a plateau and kinda came across this site. Much to my chagrine, it said that I was WAY undereating, and to admit, I was very skeptical. I decided to try it for a week, though I didn't really expect any results.
Welp, seeing as how I am still here, I guess you know how it turned out. I lost two pounds, very painlessly, and have kept up a two pound a week loss ever since. I am amazed by how easy it is, so I have decided to go 10 pounds under my original goal. I PROMISE. I PROMISE, that this works. Be honest with the calculator, and you WILL see results. It may take a while for your body to work out the kinks but it does work.
And yes, eat all your calories. All of them. Even the exercise ones. A happy metabolism = a happy you.

i started this site, the beginning of April, and although im still working on my weight loss, before this i had hit a plateau, and this has helped me to break that, in addition it educates you on the nutritional facts of the foods your eating, to be able to look at the foods and go wow that has how much sodium, carbs etc, and make the necessary changes helps you to be more mindful, and smart about some of the food choices we make. I think this is a great tool, and it's free, what's the worst thing that could happen? Regardless if your goal is weight loss, or just eating more healthful, this is a great site. Good luck, and stay positive.0

This isn't really a testification, but more of a question. I understand the eating all of the calories you are allocated because MFP calculates how much of a deficit you need in order to lose. I trust that it works for other people, but I have such a hard time eating 1200 calories a day. I just get really full and then I feel really full for a really long time after I eat. I exercise for about 45- 60 minutes a day plus walking my dog (moderate pace, 30 minutes a day).
I always thought that because I was full that was enough, but it is like impossible for me to lose weight. I don't have a lot to lose, but I got sick and it took the doctors forever to figure out what was wrong with me and whatever I had caused me to gain 15 pounds and despite exercising all the time, lose muscle mass.
I just don't know what to do.
(I'm sorry for this down post, I know it was supposed to be uplifting, but I hope that the uplifted people will have some advice for me! Thanks! )0 -
I joined MFP on January 5th. I set a goal to lose 60 lbs by the next Christmas and get back to my high school weight. I was overeating, inactive, and unhealthy. Almost 4 months later, I am 32 lbs lighter, have gotten out of the "obese" category, and have passed my half-way mark.
I have had my target set at 1.5 lbs/week. Some weeks I lose 1/2 a pound, other weeks I've lost as much as 5 lbs. I eat most of my calories every day - that's counting exercise calories. Most days I have 100 - 200 left over, but I figure that gives me room for errors in the nutritional values estimates, and tiny bites I take here and there. I think I've only gone over my calories 3 or 4 times in 4 months - by 100+ calories. I haven't really denied myself any foods. I eat the same stuff I always did, just MUCH SMALLER portions. And lots of extra veggies and fruits now. I've also switched white bread for whole wheat, regular pasta for whole wheat pasta, 1% milk for skim, regular beef to reduced fat or ground turkey, regular cookies/snacks to 100 calorie snack packs. I still go out to Happy Hour with my friends, I still eat pizza, I just plan for it. I log almost everything the night before so that I have a plan for each day.
I'm not a hard-core exerciser, but I'm proud of my work so far. During the week I do cardio, light weight, or yoga videos at home, and on the weekends I spend about 45 minutes at the park doing a combination of jogging and fast-paced walking (4.0 - 4.5 mph). Sometimes I will go hiking, go out dancing, etc.
This website has been exactly what I needed. I love being able to log everything, see it's nutritional value, and keep myself on track, but I've learned how to do it on my own (should I ever have to). My tips for new people:
1. Set realistic goals for yourself.
2. Get moving!
3. Eat all (or most) of your calories every day.
4. Be HONEST with yourself about what you're eating, why you're eating it, and about the exercise you do.
Best of Luck!!!0 -
Undereating?!?! Hah! LOL Not mocking, just never experienced that problem myself! LOL I have been addicted to the site since Jan 21st and have lost 20.5 to date eating every speckle of every cal! I hit a plateau at 10 lbs lost and about 15-18 lbs lost. The only think I did then to keep losing weight was to spice up my exercise. Weight loss really is that simple, count your cals and exercise! It's all about making a lifestyle change that you can maintain after you've lost the weight! Now, it's time for me to go find something to eat! Haha!
Ooh, and I edited because the previous post reminded me of a good point, I've not deprived myself of anything either! I still eat most of the same stuff, I just actually eat the appropriate portions and I eat a lot more fruit. I still eat cake, ice cream, cookies, just less often and less quanity! The only thing I would say I miss since I started would be real cheesecake, but I found a recipe on here for an awesome substitute! I'm saving a day of ordering cheesecake for the day I make my goal weight!0 -
Prior to MFP I thought I was doing a great job of watching what I ate and exercising....BOY was I WRONG!
Since MFP:
- I am losing weight consistently every week,
- understand that I was living in a constant state of starvation,
- was not pushing myself hard enough during workouts
- own a heart rate monitor
- read all kinds of articles related to health and fitness
- Shop at Trader Joes! Yum!
I read these posts for hours each day, read all of the links found in the posts and eat all kinds of healthy foods I would never have thought to try before.
BUT THE BEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME! My husband is making better decisions.
This morning my husband made himself oatmeal for breakfast instead of making a pound of bacon. At lunch he had a baked potato instead of french fries.0 -
Well lets see. I have been here since August 21 and have currently lost 46 lbs. For me that is quite a feat as I do have a thyroid condition. This means it is difficult to lose weight. However I have been doing it and I do not go hungry. I am careful to watch my calories and how my body is feeling and how my weight changes. That way if I need to adjust I can. My BMR is my base and I fluctuate my calories as needed. Not always as successful as I would like but I am losing. Time is going to pass regardless so I want to be losing in the process and getting healthier.
My primary exercise is walking. Though I enjoy Quigong and in the summer I hope I can bike without being out of breath.0 -
I've been here the same amount of time as Eve (this is a new username... my name was skinnier_me) so it will be a year in August.
I have been following this site to a T.
I give myself a "reward meal" once every week.
I've lost 10 pounds and have maintained it.
My workouts are:
Tae Bo
Turbo Jam
Running
Walking
Stationary Bike
Jogging in place (when I can't go outside to run)
Hop on my treadmill when my 2 yo isn't leached on my leg.
Aerobics from youtube.com or sparkpeople.com
Pilates
I eat ALL of my calories PLUS the exercise calories.
I was at 1200 calories when I started.
Am now @ 1820 calories.
It surpasses 2000 calories when I workout and sometimes it so hard to eat all of those cals.
This really really does work!
Eat the calories that is appointed to you plus the calories you accumulate from your exercise and you will see & feel a change in your body!

Amen sister V!
I think the two previous post, and mine, say it all. I've been here since September, and I'm still here. If I went on a crash diet, I wouldn't be here. Believe me, I've seen those people who do diet pills and fad diets come and go.0 -

Been doing this since the beginning of September 07, doing it on MFP since the End of September so call it 8 months. I lost 43 pounds (give or take depending on the day) and have increased my overall health dramatically.
I followed the MFP goals pretty strictly for the first 5 months. I have done some modefying lately just because I am now at maintenance weight and looking to build muscle and weight back up a few pounds instead of lose more weight.
Oh it works! If you follow it pretty strictly, and account for the fact that this, and any, plan is based on averages and you need to use a little common sense when doing things. Not ever person will have the same results and tweaking will probably need to occur, especially in the latter stages when you're talking about smaller amounts of weight and fat. But it really works!0 -
I've certainly seen the light! or lighter version of me I should say!
been here since end of Jan 08, down 14 lbs and 14 inches overall...could be more I am staying away from my scale this month LOL...sigh its Banks fault LOL...
but I totally agree w/ the concept of this site, and exercise will bring you closer to your goal faster...but you have to eat!
I also think that the support and encouragement of doing something as a group especially at this place, brings you back and coming for more, more, more....w/ rebels yell and all!:glasses:
I hope this helps LOL
hugs,

By following this site, I've lost 14lbs since mid-February. I won't say it's easy, but it's certainly possible for anyone to have success with a modest amount of attention. I was worried about not being able to eat enough and being hungry all the time, but with MFP those are not concerns--I eat all the time: my motto now is never hungry, never full, and I do that by eating 6 small meals a day.
I'm so glad I found this site! I spend a lot of time reading the message boards and learning new things.0 -
I have been on here since January, have lost 27 lbs and still loosing, still have 18 pounds to go. Yes I have tried fad diet pills in the past but I loose it fast, never get to my goal weight and then when I went off it, horrible headache (addiction to the caffine I think) and I gain all my weight back because my eating habits didni't change. Anyways this time I am doing it the healthy way, taken a little bit of time, but I see the positive in the new healthy lifestyle that I made for myself and my family, I also feel good about my weight loss and don't ever seeing it come back after I do meet my goal.0

I'm givin' this post the bump!!!!
...and adding my testification...I've been on MFP since late December 07, and have now lost 10 pounds...the first 7 came off rather easily just by increasing my activity level, then I got stuck. ..after reading all the posts about eating all your calories and finally doing it, :blushing: I have lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks. :drinker: ..I now check my net calories to make sure I'm at or near 1200 net every day....for all of the skeptics...EAT those calories..every last one of them!!!!!!! :drinker: :flowerforyou: :drinker:0 -
I started in January '08. I am down 19 lbs. I think of this as a lifestyle change not a diet. If I had been on a diet I would have given up long ago. These are the best results I've had in a long time. I've had good days and bad days, and I have hit a few plateaus. But I just keep chugging along. It is coming off slow and steady which is fine by me. I have 8 lbs left, and for the first time I really believe I can do this.:happy:0
