Hey, I'm hoping there's a suggestion or two out there for me....
I've got a one month old baby that I am breastfeeding, and in the beginning I had some problems with having enough milk. I want to lower my calorie intake because I gained a lot of weight while pregnant, but I am worried I will lose my milk again. Anyone out there been through it?

I breastfed all three of my children, and was told not to lower my caloric intake below 2,000 while nursing (exercise is great though, and strongly encouraged).
You could still lose some weight eating 2,000 calories per day (remember exclusive breastfeeding consumes at least 500 calories a day, so technically you would have 1,500 for everything else - minus your exercise.)
Finally, the most important stimulus for producing milk is nursing your baby - your body responds to the number of times and duration of nursing, and you will produce more milk when your baby depletes your milk often (so let your little one nurse often for the first couple of months to establish your milk supply.)0 -
You do need the 2000 calories, but those calories can be "smart" calories. Fruit, veggies, whole wheat stuff, etc. You can still eat healthy and have that many calories. I would cut down on the foods that have lots of calories from fat because those are the hardest to lose.
Nurse like crazy and I also pumped after my babies nursed at the beginning so that my body thought I needed that much more milk. I've heard that drinking lots of fluids help, too, but I couldn't tell a difference for myself.0 -
Hi, I had to answer your question because I've been through this exact thing! I lost 65 pounds while breastfeeding my son. I cut out all junk food, ate lots of fruit and vegetables. Had two salads a day and cut way back on bad fat, like greasy meat, fries, etc.
I took the Greens Plus diet supplement (it's a powder you mix with water) every morning (which doesn't taste great but it helps you lose weight and has tons of vitamins). All of the calories I consumed were nutritious calories so I still lost weight. The doctor said my milk was fantastic (all the healthy food). I also walked a lot and eventually started jogging.
Hope this helps! It is possible to lose weight and get in shape while breastfeeding.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions! 2000 calories, now I know what to aim for. And maybe I can convince my husband to invest in a better stroller to take my little guy jogging with me.0

I wouldn't lower it to much yet your safe zone is passed 3 months once you established a good supply and after the 12 week mark you have a good supply you can cut a few calories but seeing your newborn is only four weeks old and you've & already have had issues with production, just keep doing what your doing breast feed and pump a lot and drink a lot of water till at least 12 -13 weeks. I lost a lot of weight breastfeeding, just give it some time girl.
Sincerely mama of 2 (and currently weaning lol)1 -
Hey kudos to the OP if she is still breastfeeding her 10 year old. No judgment here.5
