My butt hurts....

I tried spinning for the first time yesterday and LOVED IT! I even woke up this morning to go to another spinning class before my usual run! But now it feels like there is a bruise in the shape of the bike seat on my butt. It really hurts!

Does anyone have an idea of when I will either get used to a sore butt or how to fix the problem so I can take more classes? And please don't say those ugly bike shorts with the butt padding - they are NOT cute!

    I wish I knew. I recently started bike riding and THAT pain is the biggest hinderance!

    Seriously! That was the WORST pain this morning when I tried to sit! At least the standing part of the class was fun? (Ok, so I'm not sure "fun" is the word, but I still enjoyed the burn!

    There are padded seat covers that you can slip over the seat. They help, but didn't completely solve the problem for me. Good luck!

    It took me about a week or two but once my rear got used to it I have no more issues with discomfort. Hang in there and I promise it will get better.

    Your bum will get used to it for me it took onlytwo classes and im fine andive been doing spin classes since november so to each person it'sdifferentdont waste ur money on a seat or cushions you will love it once urbum gets used to it i go 4times aweek so likeeverything else it takes time and every person is different.

    You just need to keep it up. Every spring when I pull my bicycle out of the garage, my butt hurts for a week or two. But your body will get used to it.

    I recently starting riding a bicycle and i have the same pain, it seriously sucks. Ive been told your body will get used to it though.

    THAT is exactly why I don't do spinning classes! Those seats hurt my *kitten* SOOOOO Bad!!

    and the gear allows me to do that comfortably.
  • You will get used to it, just keep going!! I actually never did classes on consecutive days for that reason when I first started. Now, a year later, I can do many classes in a week with just thin workout pants and no problem. And I have lost lots of my natural butt padding (if you know what I mean!!) by doing regular spin classes through out this past year. I love spinning!! Keep it up, it will get better.

    I did spin class for the first time in 2005 and used a padded seat. I stopped going after a year b/c I moved, Well I tried it again last year but the seat cover did NOT work.

    make sure the seat is adjusted to not only the right height but also pushed forward enough and tilted at the right angle for you.

    also when you sit dont just sink onto the seat like it's a chair. focus on using your diaphragm to keep yourself pulled up a bit

    There is nothing like the pain that comes from sitting on that little bitty seat! The padding does help, but I personally never got used to it and finally bought some bike shorts. SOOOOO worth it!
  • Its a saddle, not a chair. Keep your weight on your legs and arms, whenever you can.

    Also, if you have a real bicycle that's hurting you between the cheeks, then it's not fitted or adjusted right to you. Your 'sit bones' should take most / all the weight on the thickest part of the seat, and there should be a pressure relief carved out of the saddle to let the important nerves and arteries have room to breathe.

    I'm a big guy (6'6", 280lb) and my wide hip bones always meant the bulk of my weight on a bicycle was taken by my tender bum-parts, causing me to have "private numbness" and "bruised bum-muscle". I got a 175mm saddle, meant for wider sit-bones and it made all the difference.

    Take your bike into your local bike shop and have them measure your sit-bones (that's actually the accepted term for them in bicycling circles), and they can match seat to saddle more effectively. They usually have a memory foam device that you sit on, and it shows the contour of your bottom, which can then be measured from hollow to hollow to find out the width of saddle suited to your seat.
