So the purpose of this thread is I want you to name off some healthy foods that any of us could find at our local supermarkets such as the Big Y or Stop & Shop. It seems that a lot of the food sold is pumped with calories and sodium these days... and not only do I need some help knowing what to look for, but I'm sure other people could make use of this thread as well. I made a simple little template for you to follow when replying.

Name of Food :

Type of Food :

What stores have you seen this food at? :

What isle do you find it (Soups, Snacks, Frozens, etc) ? :

What are the benefits of this food? :

What unhealthy foods would this be a good healthy alternative for, if applicable :

I shop at Stop & Shop and here is what my weekly shopping list looks like, I don't deviate too much from this. First I would like to say it is a good habit to learn to shop the "outside" aisles of the market where you will find produce, seafood, proteins, dairy. A few items I go "inside" for are canned beans( I only buy Rienzi brand as they are lowest in sodium of all the canned beans and be sure to rinse thoroughly before using).
Stop & Shop has a wonderful "healthy" foods section where I get boxed almond and coconut milk - unsweetened, salt free fire roasted tomatos, So-coconut icecream, Amy's veggie burgers. I then head to the produce to get my array of fresh veggies, I never buy frozen or canned except frozen peas. Usually romaine, cucumbers, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, sweet potatos, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and brussel sprouts and anything else that may look particularily good (YES, we eat ALOT of veggies but are not vegetarian). Fruits are usually Bananas, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, a melon, some nectarines and maybe some kiwi. Oh yes, always avocados!
I then hit up the deli counter and get some low sodium sliced turkey (if fresh turkey breasts are not on sale that week which I ususally roast off and use for snacks and sandwiches). I also get a little bit of cheese and use it sparingly.
Off to seafood counter and get enough for 3 days worth of meals, whatever looks the freshest. I usually grill whatever that ends up being with some grilled veggies. Next is the other proteins for packaged ground turkey, fresh turkey breasts (I stock up on those and put them in my deep freeze when they are on sale). We do not eat much beef, maybe once every couple of weeks. I am still a softie for a great rib eye steak on the grill, so if I happen to run across one that looks particularily good I will get it for the week. Next I head to dairy and pick up chobani plain greek yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, 1% organic milk. I also use earth balance (vegan butter).
I make it a point to shop the local farmer's markets, grow my own lettuce, tomatos and herbs, and also go a neighbor for goatcheese, eggs, locally raised beef, pork and lamb and home baked bread.
That generally does it for us for the week. I spend about $100/wk for two people but that is all good healthy food and I throw nothing away.
Sorry a bit wordy, but my feeling is that if you keep it fresh, unprocessed/unpackaged you can eat very healthily. Oh yes, learn how to read labels and know what you are trying to achieve whether it is lower sodium/sugar etc. learn as you go, experiment with fruits and vegetables you have never had before. Have fun with it. don't know if you have kids or not but if you do involve them in meal planning and prep....they love it!!

Hello! I'm a huge fan of Earth Fare, so I find great alternatives that are more filling and just as tasty than regular store brand, so I'll share my favorites.

EF has a food philosophy that agrees to no inhumane treatment of animals, no additives, yadda yadda, so it's a lot easier for me to just watch sugar/fat/sodium intake and balance my diet.

Name of Food : Justin's Organic Peanut Butter Cups

Type of Food : Chocolate peanut butter cups

What stores have you seen this food at? : Earth Fare

What isle do you find it (Soups, Snacks, Frozens, etc) ? : Snacks/ desserts

What are the benefits of this food? : It's a salty, chocolatey, peanut butter snack that doesn't leave me craving 80, just the one or 2 is perfect! Plus, it's organic and follows the food philosophy.

What unhealthy foods would this be a good healthy alternative for, if applicable : reeses cups, hersheys, chocolate cravings.
    ---

Name of Food : Garden Chipotle Lime chicken fingers

Type of Food : Meatless ( I think soy?) chicken fingers

What stores have you seen this food at? : Earth Fare, whole foods, etc.

What isle do you find it (Soups, Snacks, Frozens, etc) ? : Frozen

What are the benefits of this food? : Chipotle lime is my favorite, but it's a perfect topper to salads or snack wraps, I *love* it with cheddar cheese on lettuce with onions, and if I need something sweet to go with it, raspberry vinagrette dressing (Target brand is yummy).

What unhealthy foods would this be a good healthy alternative for, if applicable : Frozen chicken fingers

I don't know if this one counts because it's a combination of two, but I *love* the combination

Name of Food : Emerald cocoa almonds & crasins

Type of Food : Homemade trail mix!

What stores have you seen this food at? : Sams club, Earth Fare, Ingles, Target

What isle do you find it (Soups, Snacks, Frozens, etc) ? : Snacks, bulk

What are the benefits of this food? : It's very filling and great for a 3 p.m. pick me up, with just the right balance of sweet and crunchy.

What unhealthy foods would this be a good healthy alternative for, if applicable : Chocolate chunky trail mix or anything from a vending machine.

A high calorie count and/or sodium content does not make a food "unhealthy" whatever that means to you

I shop at Stop & Shop

Do you have any friends that work for the company? If you do, find a way to use their stop and shop card and score an extra 5% off! I worked there for 7 years, and my husband still works for the compnay. We didn't have associate points until a couple years ago, greatest thing ever! (The gas points are pretty awesome too!)

Well my issue is I tend to like to eat little bits here and there throughout the day with a small to medium lunch and a medium to large dinner.... it's how I keep my appetite from being unbearable while dieting. So low calorie and low sodium foods are important for me to have a lot of.
  • For the few responses this thread has gotten you guys are helping a lot!!! Hopefully this thread will fill up a lot more :) Like I said I didn't only start it for my own sake but for others as well. I actually wish this site had a whole function/application for this specific purpose.
