So I was just wondering...what do people think about dreadlocks? I really want them and my thoughts are, you can only pull them off for so long, so why not do it now? I just wanted to know what people's thoughts on them were.
I was also wondering if people who have had them or have them have any insight on how they affect job opportunities?
Thanks!

I for one love the look of dreadlocks, in fact I was just watching the Tracy Chapman video "Fast Car" last night and was admiring her locks. Love them.0
-
i think that too often they look dirty and yucky. when they are clean, they look ok. kind of. lol (not my hair though, do what you feel good in!)0
-
my best girlfriend actually has dreadlocks and she loves them0
-
I had them, then I got a new job, which didn't allow them, so I had to shave my hair
I make a pretty good looking boy though :P
ETA: and people always think your a hippie..0 -
Often they tend to just look dirty and messy but sometimes they can look awesome too. I have heard that taking them out is a pain, you have to slowly comb them out, or just shave your head, so be prepared for either option when you are done with them.0

I like em but im too much of a wimp to do it lol. Its on my bucket list though haha0

I think dreads are the ultimate common denominator hair style, everyone looks good with them. I've had wild dreads for 5 years, they can be heavy, hot in summer and unpleasant to feel on my skin but i think they look cool as, not cutting them off anytime soon.
Shall post a pic tomorrow if you like.0 -
my ex-hubsand/baby-daddy has them.. They are nasty. They smell and he does not have a job. He looks like he crawled out from behind a dumpster. When I was married to him, he did not have them and he was able to get a job, not able to hold a job, but was able to get them. Now he stands on the corner and plays his guitar for a couple bucks, enough to buy himself a pack of cigarettes.
Like I said, dreadlocks are nasty and they smell. Take care of your hair.
p.s. I'm not saying that all people with dreads are nasty, some people keep theirs clean, but I will be honest, they don't look clean even if they do keep them clean. This post is purely my opion about my ex-husbands dreads. He's a dead beat.0 -
I had them when I was really young, like 17. They weren't the greatest as I did them myself without any salon help. The last straw was when a kid pointed out to me that there was a spider in my hair and I didn't even realize it. He was very polite about it and it wasn't living in my hair but I couldn't FEEL IT.
Needless to say I had to go to the salon to be told that I would lose 2 feet of hair. I had to pull off a pixi cut... was very traumatizing at first but I felt so much better! Never again.
I think they can look really cool but there is so much care involved.
DO NOT USE SHAMPOOS THAT LEAVE RESIDUE!!!! That's all I'm going to say lol0 -
NO sterotyping on this thread please. I have locs and I am black. My hair is beautiful and they dont smell and there is nothing dread about my hair. I work in Corporate dealing with C-level management and I get compliments daily. I have seen white and black people with locs and it looks lovely. It depends on the texture of your hair. Will post a picture0

No dreadlocks here, but some of the comments make me think of this song.

I had dreads for a little over a year and I loved them. Are you planning on naturally letting them form? Or backcombing them? I have fine hair so I chose to backcomb mine. My boyfriend had natural dreads and his chin length hair took about 8 months to separate into dreads. He simply buzzed his head when he was tired of them, while I painstakingly combed mine out (+10 combs, 2 bottles of spray in conditioner and 2 weeks of on and off combing)
My number one advice is, PLEASE do not use wax!! It may help hold them together initially but so can small elastics. Wax will never come out of them and is what can lead to stinky gummy dreads.
Advice number 2 is carefully choose a shampoo with no residue, any normal shampoos leaves product behind to make your hair soft or shiney etc, but you want your hair to be coarse to knot up fully. I used a tea tree oil bar soap on my head
If you do get them, be prepared for a wave of ignorant people who feel the need to tell you that you are dirty and gross, as well as randomly touch your hair. Honestly, some people have no shame haha0 -
I have never really liked them, they make people look dirty. SOME people can pull it off, but not many. I also don't like the fact that you have to shave your head if you decide you don't want them anymore. I would never do that.0
-
I've always wanted them, but won't get them because of my profession. I have only met one person that it didn't look good on, he was a red-head and he didn't take proper care of them.
If you keep up with them, then they can look darn good man or woman.
P.S. you don't HAVE to shave your head to get rid of them, you can brush it out, it's just painful and very time consuming.0 -
I love em...My guy has them and he hair is soft and curly....I considered them but like change to much outside of changing the color on them...But I wash and tighten his and they don't look dirty so I don't know where that came from...It takes up keep just like any other hair do....All hair can look dirty...0

I've seen people who look gorgeous in them and a big part of this is how well the dreads are maintained. I've also seen some nasty looking, skanky looking dreads on people of all races.0
-
Love the look when they are well maintained. Wish I could have them but at 38 it is too old0
-
Dirty and unkempt IMO.0
-
Honestly, they completely gross me out. I just think they look super nasty. Even if they are clean, they never look clean.
*shrug*
Of course, I'm just a stranger on an internet forum and you're free to do what you want.0 -
If they are looked after they look good but I have only ever seen one person where it was obvious she took very good care of them.
Maybe look into dread falls/ fake dreads if you'r concerned about shaving/combing out hair (which I've heard is very painful) when you can't have dreads anymore.
You can buy them online and you just plait them into your natural hair and can leave them for days at a time. Easier to wash/look after and not permanent.0 -
I used to have them, but mine were horribly unkempt and my dad spent all of Christmas day brushing them out with baby oil. Then I had to cut off about half of my hair because it was dead. But I miss them more than anything and I'd like to get them back if it doesn't affect my ability to obtain a job. Unfortunately, I think it will.0

be young ,be foolish and be happy .go for it0

Not a fan.0

If you are not "of color", then wearing dreadlocks make you a poser.0

Being Jamaican I have a pretty distinct look of how dreadlocks should be worn.
Frankly they look unkempt and downright illfitting on Caucasian hair. The texture doesn't suit the longevity of how locks are worn. Just my opinion.
Its your head however; do what makes you happy.0 -
There's a guy who uses the health suite at the gym, he has dreadlocks down to his knees and often washes his hairin the showers , it annoys me becasuse he always leaves the cloth in the shower that he uses to tie his hair with . At that length dreads look nasty
Mind you that's not as bad as the women who leave disposable razors in the shower or the guy that files his feet in the steam room0 -
Do it and do it now. I have an uber conservative job now and I am SO HAPPY that I had the chance to do pretty much everything I wanted to do with my hair while I was footloose and fancy free....including long past my butt goddess braids.0

I 100% agree, anyone with any hair type and style can look gross if you dont take care of yourself. If you are not "of color", then wearing dreadlocks make you a poser.
Are you trying to say I was masquerading as a person "of color" while I had my dreads  LOL Good grief!
If not, what exactly is a person with dreadlocks posing to be?
OP, this thread will give you a taste of the ignorance youll experience firsthand if you choose to get em lol0 -
I think they look good on some, and not on others! Not that this helps you much. While I do think they would look pretty on you, your hair is gorgeous, and I would hate to see it go.0

I know this thread is a bit old, but I thought I'd add my two cents. I had dreads for 3 1/2 years, then they just got too long and I was worried about getting jobs (going into education). I had my boyfriend at the time comb them out. It took like 24 hrs collectively to get them out and my hair was super frizzy for like a year afterwards. I'd recommend just cutting your hair when you don't want them anymore. That said, if you aren't willing to cut your hair short afterwards, it probably isn't best for you.
I had mine while in highschool and had a lot of people make judgmental comments. Some kids thought I didn't wash my hair, or I used pee or toothpaste to make them dread. I have no idea where people get these crazy ideas. I washed my hair every other day, which lots of people do regardless of having dreads. It's like washing a sponge, you can get all the oil out, it just takes a bit more effort and you have to use shampoo that leaves no residue.
I really miss my dreads and would definitely get them back if there wasn't such a stigma against them. I just got into grad school, so maybe I'll give it another go since I won't be in the job market for a while.
Also, from what I noticed having straight hair and all, my dreads only really looked crappy near my scalp. My hair just didn't want to dread. You can either have it start dreading at a lower point, or constantly rub them to make them dread better.
I'll see if I can get an image to work to show you.
