  • You aren't going to find a Heart Rate Monitor for $25, but spending more is worth the investment. Pedometers are inexpensive but they won't measure your calorie burn, heart rate, etc. MIO is a great brand of HRMs - you've got a choice of strap or strapless models, and petite versions for women's smaller wrists. If you go to the MIO website, you can do a little assessment of what you want your HRM to do, and it will recommend the model based on your input. I've had my MIO for 3 years and have only changed the battery. Good luck!

I own several pedometers and I must say that for accuracy, ease-of-use and comfort, the new Omron HJ-303 wins hands down and here's why . . . Other model Omrons such as the HJ-112 and the newer HJ720ITC (replete with software) have established themselves as highly accurate for walking, etc. Nonetheless, it takes 10 minutes for them to begin recording aerobic steps. With the HJ-303, aerobic steps begin recording 4 seconds after you begin an activity. Also, the older Omron models have a tendency to pop off your waistband if you bend down to tie a shoe for instance. Not so with the new model, has a great clip which stays securely in place regardless of the thickness of your clothing. It will also work on a diagonal, upside down, etc. I am an admitted "pedometer snob" and this model more than meets my specificatiions. Good luck with your choice.

As far as HRMs, I own both a MIO (strapless model) and a Polar F4 (with chest strap). Both are fairly accurate, but the MIO is more comfortable. Its one drawback is that you must either stop your activity or reduce its intensity to get a reading. Anyone who can replace a watch battery, can replace the MIO's. Not so with Polar - it must be sent back to the manufacturer. It registers your heart rate without interfering with the particular activity with which you are engaged.

I have a polar F4 too but I can get the battery changed out at any watch repair place for around $7 and it takes 5 minutes....If the chest strap transmitter battery fails, then you have to get a new one, but mine last around 2-3 years.

The concern is that if something goes wrong and you send your Polar back to the manufacturer after it has been opened by a nonauthorized source, then you have effectively voided the warranty.

I have a Polar F6, which I absolutely love! At first, I thought it would be hard getting used to the strap, but it's actually not too bad and stays in place great when a sports bra is worn over it. True, they're expensive, but so worth it to really know how many calories you're burning with your unique information.

    Good luck!

IMO, it's worth spending the extra dollar(s) for quality and accuracy. My first two training sessions I used a polar F6, loved it so much I went out got one, well, I ordered it from ebay. I plan on wearing in throughout the day just to see how many calories I actually burn while sitting on my rear. Ha! They also sync up to the machines at gyms (if you go to one). they have a woman's watch that isn't big at all. It's more expensive but I think it would last longer and have better quality than a 25$ one, and in the long run you'll be saving money.

I have the reebok precision heart rate monitor and I love it. It's everything the polars are (excapt not as pretty) but cheaper. It syncs to gym equipment also and you change the battery yourself. I got mine off ebay for $30.
