At work I have been challenging myself to drink more water and everytime I finish an bottle of water I do 20 squats and increase it by 5 each time... I do them without any weight but I am wondering if that would even help or if I would need to do alot more of them..
Thanks for your help :)

Depends on what use you want to get out of the squats. Doing lots of BW squats won't give you big leg muscles. But they will burn calories. If you are a runner or biker, doing lots of BW squats will strongly translate to hill climbing.

Just a warning, 20-25 BW squats or so is the suck threshold. Beyond that cardio endurance starts to become a factor as well; high rep squatting is pretty much torture. Useful torture, but torture nonetheless.
  • I eventually will do them with weights once I get access to a gym lol but for now I figure it could help a little and something to do to help my goals during work makes me feel good!

I am working on my running as well so thats good if it will help. Haha ya I can tell that the high rep squatting is torture... definately not fun!

Thank you for your advice! :)

Well if you don't have access to weights then I would just say do as many of them as you possibly can. I like to have a general number to shoot for when doing low weight reps on stuff but I don't really stop there. I keep going until well after I started feeling the burn.

I do body weight squats in between sets when I lift on chest and back days... It helps stretch the muscles (dynamic stretching vs. static stretching) and warm them up.

I am a big fan of traditional squats which is a full body workout.. including weight will engage the core, all leg muscles and glutes.. so if you'd like to improve squats.. strengthing core (such as plank movements) will do you wonders.

Consider it practice for when you start doing weighted squats. By the time you get there your form should be solid (just make sure you're doing them right of course).

now try 1 legged squats (also called pistols). also when you do the 2 legged squats, try to get as low as possible and make sure you get your hips involved.

i think it's a good idea to practice now without weights, that way you'll be good to go when you access to weights

While waiting on that gym access, alternate your sets of squats with sets of burpees.
  • Try doing different kids of squats for variety. Sumo squats, plie squats, jumping squats, split leg jumping squats, one legged, side to side, hold the squat in the lowest position. There are so many differnt ways to do them. It makes it fun and it hits your leg muscles from every possible angle. You don't need weights but that depends on your goals.
