Coronary knee ligament problem Anyone had this??

I have been training for close to 6 months to run my first half marathon. 10 days prior to the race (both mentally and physically prepared) I strain my knee. I have been told to rest it this week with ice every hour; and try to run later this week. This is really discouraging. Has anyone out there had this injury? Is it reasonable to think it will be better in a week? I'm not looking to set a world record on June 10, but would like to run it in about 2:20.

    Not sure what the coronary ligament is, however, I somehow managed to strain/twist/sprain the ligament on the inside of my knee which was very painful for quite some time. Finally went to the ortho last week after about a month of hobbling around. His first comment was a ligament takes about 6 weeks to repair itself. Sure enough, it finally began to get better.

    He also mentioned exercising it, probably to get more blood to the knee. I wasn't and couldn't run, I could barely walk.

    I've had several knee injuries in the past and still had to read up on what these ligaments are. The coronary ligaments are part of the anchor of the menisci to the femur end cap. Meniscus injuries are typical of overuse (say someone not used to running at all suddenly doing 5 miles a day) or sudden twisting or lateral movements, and it doesn't have to be that hard of a twist if it happens at the wrong moment.

    Definitely ice and rest it to get any swelling out of your knee. As I'm not a doctor I'm going to stop short of saying you're good to run the race if the pain goes away inside a week, but I think you'll be lucky to be running pain free in 1-3 weeks based on my own personal history. Good luck.
  • With any ligament injury, rest is needed, and then gentle exercise to 'losen' it.

    You may want to consider some ITB stretches before and after any running.

    Depending on the severity of the damage, we always recommend a minimum of 6 weeks before getting back on the 'road' or treadmill.

    Might be worth considering some support mechanism for your knee also.

    Thank all of you for taking your time to respond. I was really hoping to see a host of answers saying "you will be fine in a week", but this is really what I was expecting to see. I may have to shoot for a half later in the year. Thanks again.
