Try the Couch to 5K program (google it and you should find an explanation). It incrementally increases your running time over the course of 8 weeks so that you can run a full 5K by the end!

Here are all my beginner's running tips:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/BerryH/view/20-things-i-wish-i-d-known-about-running-when-i-started-103936

    Take note of point 1:
When you start out, it’s HARD! Even if you think you’re fit, running is so different to anything else you’ve done before you will get out of breath quickly. Stick with it. Can’t manage a minute? Go slow. Still can’t? GO SLOWER!

The simplest version of couch to 5K (C25K) can be found here:

The biggest mistakes I have made are going out to fast in the beginning and adding too much too fast. Run/walk programs are really effective. Short HIIT workouts can help with speed when you get to that point. It's a journey, Rome wasn't built in a day, blah, blah, blah. You get the point.

I began running in January and could only run 1/4 mile (5 minutes or so). I do not have asthma to deal with, but am up to running between 2 miles and a 5k depending on the day. C25K is a great way to begin, but no matter what just begin and you will see impressive progress. Be sure you work with your doctor to make sure you have your asthma under control for exercise though!

Oh and I have exercise-induced asthma. I have a reliever inhaler I carry with me for emergencies, but so long as I'm training steadily I don't need it any more as I've got fitter. Hill repeats and sprints are another matter!

Just getting started on calorie counting, but have been running now for almost a month. I just had my second baby a few months ago and never lost the first baby's weight since they are only 18 months apart ... So pregnant for three years ;) and scars about starting to jog again. So I looked around for something to help me since I was so out of shap and found couch to 5k app on iPad. I love it .... In week 3 and up to 3 min intervals and not feeling like I am going to die ... If anything feel like I could do more now, but trusting the program and sticking with the intervals they set. I always make sure to stretch after and have not gotten too sore or hurt afterward. The app guides you to free stretching stuff on u-tube in one of the tips and I just picked the first one.
