Biggest Loser Extreme Weight loss question

I don't normally watch this show but last night I caught the beginning of the story and this guy weighted in at 398lbs. His goal for the first 3 months is 100lbs lost. How can he lose this much weight in such a short amount of time? Is it because he is starting at such a high weight? I would think that losing that much would be hard on his health. I am just curious, anybody with answers?

1000 calories per day plus extreme amounts of cardio and yes his weight was a major factor as well.

A girl at work here started her weight loss at about the same time as me and lost about 60 pounds much more quickly. She had to have her gall bladder taken out and told me that her doctor said it was because she lost the weight so quickly. When I asked my doc about it, because I'd never heard of that before, she said that losing weight that quickly is very rough on the gall bladder. Weird. Makes me glad I'm still going with the turtle approach.

I thought the show was good though - at least it showed some obstacles and that family/friends are not always supportive.

They said he would be on 2000 calories a day. I am sure the exercise made up a lot of difference since none of us have all day to live in the gym. But thanks for the input.

Yeah, he was eating 10,000 calories a day but they cut it down to 2,000 calories a day so it's going to make a big change initially. But his weight loss slowed down a bit as it went on. I thought it was inspirational in that he stood up for himself and didn't let his fiance ruin his chance to better himself, even if it did end their engagement altogether.

I didn't watch it long enough to see his finance break off with him. That is a real shame!! But it sure is better he find out she isn't willing to be supportive of him. He seems like such a nice guy.

The bigger you are, the easier it is to lose initially.
