The Chocolate Milk Dillemma

So recently I went to get myself a chocolate milk like I do sometimes. I usually get a nesQuik bottle. However the gas station had chosen to change their supplier, instead stocking Darigold brand Old Fashioned Chocolate milk. The label touted its lack of HFCS, using sugar instead. I was skeptical, then floored by how tasty this was.

Best. Chocolate. Milk. Ever.

I'm not "recommending" it since the bottle (just a regular bottle for one person) was over 500 calories. Holy cow.

However, since it was that good I was compelled to email the company and thank them for such a delicious product. :)

Here's the dilemma. They sent me 4 coupons for free 1/2 gallons of the milk!

It does say that I *can* use for regular milk. But.

TASTY chocolate milk treat (to be had in moderation over time) or plain ol' boring milk?

    Me tooo!!
  • Honestly (i promise I'm not kidding), I have read that chocolate milk is the PERFECT post-workout food. It has simple surgars to replace what you have depleted quickly and proteins to help rebuild the muscles you've just broken down. That being said, I'm certainly no expert and would take what I say with a grain of salt.

I say take the coupons and get the milk after a workout! If it fits into your calories for the day, go for it.

I love chocolate milk...maybe I'll have one after my run today...mmmm....

Had to edit for spelling errors...sorry. I have this thing about spelling.

As a runner they tout chocolate milk as a perfect post run recovery drink. The carbs and the protein in the chocolate milk are essential. for muscle recovery.

 If it's low fat chocolate milk all the better! Drink up, and just factor it into your daily total!
  • This is interesting because I was just visiting with my dietician two hours ago, and she wanted to find ways for me to increase daily dairy intake. She suggested and gave me a sample of something called Moo Magic. You'd have to google it, and she said it's something she orders online. Basically it's like those little Crystal Light packets that you add to your water, except it's chocolate milk powder. It's 8 calories per packet, and one packet makes 8oz of choc. milk, so it's only 130 calories for a glass of chocolate milk (if you use 2%), which I think is kind of amazing. I haven't tried the sample yet, but she absolutely raved over it.

It just really surprised me that there was something out there like that for chocolate milk, so I thought I would share the info. Might be something to look into if you're a chocolate milk fiend.

Not lowfat at all! :) If it remember right, the standard bottle was 578 calories total. Of course, it says 2 servings, but who drinks half a bottle?

I think if I had a half gallon of this, I could pour out one serving a day. Maybe. hmm.

Give the coupons to friends....it is the holiday season! I couldn't have my "trigger" foods around like that; especially not in that quantity. But it IS just my opinion.

Use the coupons for Darigold's 1% chocolate milk. I just enjoyed a tasty 8-ounce bottle as my post-workout drink about a half hour ago! It may not be as delicious to you as the old-fashioned variety, but it had only 190 calories and was pretty darned good.

Please let me know if it was any good after you sample it. I try and get my chocolate in any way, shape and/or form that I can! :glasses:
  • I know this is no where near as good as chocolate milk, but if your trying to keep on track and want to boost your protein intake  Recently tried Jillians Natural Whey Protein powder, I mix it with 8oz of skim milk, its pretty good just not chocolatey enough. Might try adding some chocolate syrup to it, that would only be 50 extra calories. But I do enjoy drinking one after working out to refuel my body. :drinker:

I've seen fat free chocolate milk. I used to make it myself as well. There's no fat in hershey's syrup. It's all sugar.
