Pregnant and Sick - When should I see a doc?

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and I've have a really bad cold for the last few days.
My thermometer ran out of batteries so I don't know if I have a fever but I'm dry coughing really hard and it's causing really bad pain in my chest, dizziness and shortness of breath. I don't know if this is normal, I haven't been sick like this in years.
How long should I wait to go to the doctor? Or should I just stay home and hold out till it's over or gets worse?

You shouldn't have to ask lol. You have a baby inside there. And if you haven't been sick like that in years then I'd call. Some may disagree with me. But it isn't just you anymore, you've got a living thing in there that depends solely on you. Take excellent care of yourself. Hope you feel better0

Go now. At least call and see what they say (they are going to say go now). The issue is that it's a dry cough. Without being there I can't say for certain, but it could be something more and if you need antibiotics it's better to take less intense ones usually. Not to mention, everything that effects you effects the baby.
Take care!0 -
Definately see a dr! The worse thing he/she wil tell you is that is is just a cold...
They can also tell you what meds are safe to take while pregnant, too...but also check with an ob/gyn before taking anything0 -
I'm thinking if you have to ask an online source for baby info than you need to call. This should not be your first avenue of advice.0

Ditto. Agreed. Remember, when you're sick, your baby is also sick. Call the doctor soon.0 -
I see that you're in WA state too. Are you aware that there is a whooping cough (pertussis) epidemic here? Have you had your booster? You should see a doctor right away. I hope you feel better soon!0

It's going around right now. But I'd defenitly go see the Dr. ESPECIALLY if you don't know wether or not you have a fever. That could be detrimental to the baby. Like another poster said, worst thing that could happen is they say it'll go away on it's own.0

Call your doctor. I remember getting sick with a cold when I was pregnant and was afraid to take anything. I ended up with a bad sinus infection. My doctor scolded me for letting it get that bad.0

You should have been called your doctor even if you weren't pregnant. You maybe having an asthma flair up or pneumonia. Call now.0

I agree with everyone else. Go now or at least call and ask if he/she thinks you need to come in. There were a few times my doc called something in for me and I didn't have to see him. But don't let it get worse. Hope you get better quickly. :flowerforyou:0

If you're worried about it, just go. They may look at you like you're overreacting, but HEY that's your baby inside there. Hopefully, they say you're fine and send you home. At least then you won't be worrying.0

Depends, are you worried about you & your babys well being. If so the answer should be obvious.0

Okay thanks guys. This is my first pregnancy and I know pregnant women get sick more easily so I wasn't sure if this is normal or not. Thanks for the advice!0

Do you want to know if your baby is in danger? then pick up a phone and call the doctor. they will tell you if you need to be seen or not...asking a bunch of strangers probably isnt the right choice.0

Probably just wait till after the baby is born, so the medicines don't affect the pregnancy.0

When you're short of breath, it's because you're hypoxic (low oxygen). Chest discomfort, dizziness, and hypoxia can start putting you in shock, where blood gets shunted to vital organs. The placenta isn't considered a vital organ by your body. When the placenta's not getting nutrients, it's starving for oxygen and nutrients. Needless to say, bad for baby.
Make sure you're staying hydrated (drink a lot of water, urine should be clear) and make sure you're getting your daily iron intake. You should be on prenatal vitamins if you're not already.
You should definitely be seen by family doctor, who may put you on antibiotics. You should also go to your OB doctor for a non-stress test and blood pressure screening, if you haven't recently.0 -
Go to the dr. They might not give you anything, but at least you are safe, rather than sorry. If you WEREN'T pregnant, would you go? Probably. So GO!!!0
-
Hmm... I don't know... call him and ask!0
-
Go! I decided not to go when I was pregnant and sick and ended up taking a 2am medivac'd flight, 6 days in ICU isolation, then another week in hospital.
Moral of the story: Better safe then sorry.0 -
Actually that's why I asked. If I weren't pregnant, I wouldn't consider seeing a doctor. I would've just toughed it out and taken some cold medicine and slept it off. Now that I am, I feel like I'm overly worried so I don't know when I'm being that way or if it's reasonable to see one. I'm going to see the doc today. Thanks everyone.0

webMD....theyre great like that....not only will they tell you if its a problem, they'll teach you how to solve it.
hell, why even involve medical professionals...google "baby delivery" and you won't even have to leave the house.
might even be an app for it!0
