Sugar Addict!

Hi everyone,

I'm working my buns off exercising and eating right - except for days when I eat sugar! Any ideas on detoxing and possible recipes with sugar alternatives like Truvia, or less sugar, etc.?

Ill do great for a week with no sugar and then splurge, which usually turns into 4 cookies etc instead of one. Help! Lately I'm exercising just to stay under my allotted calories because the cookies I eat are bumping me over :/

    hey im the same!

I eat very well and healthy for a week or so then splurge on something I shouldnt! I have taken to treating these weak moments with a small tub of plain yogurt with a squirt of honey in it, much better than processed cookies as the nutients are all still present and its much more filling gram for gram then cookies and such.

When I need to include sugar i try to use brown sugar as it tastes twice as sweet so you need half as much and it is much less refined than white sugar so its a touch better for you.

    Hope this helps!?

Eat one piece of whole fruit when you have a sugar craving. It won't set off the highs and lows that sugar creates. I am diabetic and also have a sweet tooth. Whole fruit such as 5 dried apricots, and orange or a small apple will stop it. Having a little protein also helps to even out our blood sugar so we don't have the high and low swing involved with sugar--therefore it controls the craving. I don't trust truvia because it has not been researched as well as the others, but have used aspertaime and suctalose for 40 years without side effects or problems, and it also quenches my craving for the TASTE. But if you are exercising a lot and keeping your calories around 1200-1300, you may actually need to recalculate your calorie need. You may have to increase your calories to keep up with the added demands of your exercising. By the way, I am a cookie-holic. If I eat one I'll eat a dozen or empty the container. Whole grain carbs such as a 21 grain bread that is really chewy stops my refined carb craving. I avoid all refined sugars and carbs because they start my craving.

This helps me: Before whatever food you're about to put into your mouth, first have a big glass of cool water. Have 2 if you want!! :) Also, just having some people on here to hold you accountable for food choices might help. Make sure your diary is open so people can read it, and be honest about what you eat.

Sometimes it works for me to have a piece of fruity flavored gum or a cup of tea... I have to admit it doesn't always work though so I am listening in for everyone's ideas!

You gotta substitute the addiction to sugar with something that you body can use instead. Then slowly reduce that.

    Eat fruity stuff.

Also, you have a craving for sugar because you prob need more of that "energy."

Are you eating enough carbs? If you cut yourself too low on carbs, then you could be craving things like cookies.

    Has happened plenty to me.

Try some oatmeal in the morning. Flavored kind. Maple and brown sugar? Cinnamon and spice? Big breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, smaller dinner, snack.
  • Thanks for the encouraging replies. I have heard of the fruit fix and am embarrassed to say I have pre-portioned grapes and cheese in my fridge just for the occasion! Maybe its a bad attitude... I feel like I'm eating "not fun" foods unless I'm eating sugar. You all may be right on the calories, too. Im working out 5-6 hours a week and am very hormonal (maybe excess estrogen?). In any case, I will also try the oatmeal in the morning ( I usually have yogurt). Thanks again for the reminders. Sometimes that is all it takes :)
