YOGA

Can anyone vouch for yoga as a good way to lose weight? Any suggestions on what DVD I should get?

I have done very little yoga however it will help with weight loss to take off very little pounds at a time. An hour of yoga for an average size person (guy 170 lbs. and woman around 150 lbs) you can burn around 125 calories depending on the workout. If you want to burn more calories then i would suggest Zumba, dancing, or running. :) good luck though and catch that goal!!

In my opinion regular Yoga will not help weight loss - but has many other benefits if taught correctly.

There are some components to traditional yoga (not the silly Westernized yoga that is in vogue) that use advanced meditation techniques that can cause weight loss to exceed what would be predicted by caloric intake. However, you would need to check very very carefully on a teacher that deals with this - it can mess up your head.

The Yoga X DVD from P90X is a very good workout and burns a lot of calories. A fair % of people doing P90X skip it because it is too hard. You either are in insanely good shape or need to try harder/be less sloppy if your legs aren't on fire by the 45 minute mark.

I teach yoga and have been practicing for years. You will find amazing benefits from yoga, BUT you do need to pair it up with cardio if you want to lose weight. I think it's awesome for your body, and your mental health, but it's not something to do to "lose weight," per say. I still recommend adding it to your workout regime :)
