knee pain

hi everyone, hoping you can answer some questions for me.

i'm 22 years old, 5'4" and weigh around 200. I've recently began working out for the first time in my entire life -- i've always been incredibly inactive. lately i've been walking anywhere from 1-3 miles a few times a week, doing the 30 day shred every day for the past 2 weeks, and also do an intense bootcamp once a week.

my knees have been absolutely killing me. i am wondering -- is this the same as muscle pain or am i really damaging my knees? my bootcamp instructor has told me to wait until i've lost some weight before i start running, but they hurt even if i do jumping jacks, or after i walk a few miles on the treadmill. now any time i've driving or walking or anything i am constantly aware of aching knees. i'm too young for this!

thoughts?

I have bad knees, and the 30 day shred KILLED them. I did finish it, but some of the lunges I just had to skip.

I started it at 270 lbs...so I'm not sure you need to lose weight to do it, maybe just modify a bit :)

for me, the lunges aren't too bad, it's the jumping jacks or jump ropes or butt kicks that are really hurting.

Keep going. It will get better. At your age I would doubt you have permanent damage to your knees. If you can hear bone on bone scraping then go see a Doctor as you might some medical issues. If it is just soreness then you are just getting used to the exercise.

I have bad knees myself. They say that every extra pound of weight is the equivalent to four pounds of pressure on your needs. That said, it may take a while before you can do everything without pain. It does get better as weight comes off.

Some things that have helped me are the knee braces/wraps that are a band that go just under the knee. Also yoga. The poses strengthen the supporting muscles, esp on balancing poses. That will help take some additional pressure off as muscles are engaged to support your weight.

But as your trainer says, wait to run for now. Just keep it up. it will get better!

I have only recently started jogging and had a LOT of knee and shin trouble at first. I found that stretches and targeted gym machine weights work on the groin and back of leg muscles (ok I am not technically accurate on the names!!) made a big difference. I didn't go for large weights, just as much as was easy for me to move, but 3-4 sets of 15 reps with lower weights helped to strengthen the supporting muscles for the area. Also take note if you are leaning to a side more than another as this was also a problem for me at first. My hips were tight and needed stretching out or I would favour one side and cause issues further down the leg.

Other than that, just take it easy for the first month. You will get less done if you injure you injure yourself than if you take it a little slower.
    I hope that helps...
