I have no equipment but some kickboxing CDs but I'm not NEARLY fit enough to do those well. I can do yoga too, but want something a bit more.
Give me some ideas. I weigh 300lbs and cannot jump, run hard or do any high impact stuff because I'll get hurt.
Anything low impact that will get my heart racing.
Thanks in advance for the ideas.

brave the rain and go out on your bike or walk or run, crouch to 5k is really good on the nhs web site or itunes also the mens fittness on line have some really good work outs, it doesn't what you do but just move it move it0
-
eh I would hop on my bike anyways just wear something old you dont mind gettin dirty from mud and water.0

Walk around the house or apartment. If you have steps, try to go up and down as many times as possible. You might check with a bike shop, or eBay, or Craig's list to see if you can get a stand for your bike so you can use it indoors........I'm not sure how much they cost. Or crank up the tunes and dance, dance, dance!!0

I don't like going out in the rain on my road bike, it is too slippery and dangerous. I also tow my daughter in a trailer, so the bike is really out when it rains.0

Dance! I'm not kidding. Put on music and just flail about for an hour. When I dance, I burn more calories than when I run (and that's w/a HRM)!0

I think you are on to something with the dancing... my daughter would love that.
Unfortunately we live in a 800sq foot house with 5 people in it, so there is no space for the bike stand or I'd have bought one already. Been wanting one for 4 years... oh well.
Dancing would have to do for tonight. Not as much burn as riding, but that is okay.0 -

Really? that is interesting!0 -

Turn on some music, and dance....do some heavy cleaning....march in place....just keep moving.0

Can you squat and jab the air? That will get your heart pumping. Maybe you can try the DVDs and do a modified version of the moves. I am doing Insanity and I'm 336, the jumps are really hard and I push myself through it. Also there are times when I just have modify the move to fit my needs. I hope this helps. :flowerforyou:0

sounds to me like a bunch of excuses! if you really want this get off your booty and do it! A lttle rain never killed anyone or you can try things in home as well just do it no excuses!0 -

I wouldn't take my road bike in the rain either. Those skinny, slick tires turn many road surfaces into ice!
OP: Consider a bicycle trainer. They are super handy.0 -
Push-ups, sit ups, squats, lunges, planks, jumping jacks, burpees, all exercises that if you do them with minimal down time between sets will get your heart rate going. Do what you can because it all helps.0
-
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will look at the suggested videos and I will dance if all else fails. I might try some lunges and core yoga too.
If I was in this for the excuses, I would hardly post for suggestions, I'd just say: It's raining, oh well!! All the limitations I have is because I have over exercised in the past and I know what my body will tolerate and what not.0 -

Thanks for this. This is great!!! I just ordered one of the DVDs from my local library and will pick it up tomorrow. I have something for those rainy days now! It reminds a bit of the80s/90s earobics trend, but I like it. Low impact though high energy.0 -
I'll back you up on the road bike in the rain concern. There's no way you'd catch me out there on those slick tires. But that said, no excuses...dancing is an awesome burn, and your munchkin will love it too!
As for the bike trainer, they don't need to take up space, except when you're using it. And then, it can take up space, right in front of the tv (and a big windy fan!). When your bike is secured into the trainer, you can actually flip the bike 90 degrees onto its tire, and rest it against a wall. That way, it takes up vertical space (in a storage closet, etc), but not only the floor square footage of the bike trainer itself (mine is about 2 feet square). As an alternative solution...you're already storing your bike somewhere. The bike trainer I have collapses flat, so it can just take up a wee bit of space under a couch, etc. A bike trainer is one of the best investments I've ever made.
Good luck, and keep on moving!0 -
Oh, they collapse. I guess I've only looked at those big ones that don't. In all honesty, I'm also nervous about the bike axle because the tire hangs in the air. Do you know if, at heavy weights if that would be a problem? Maybe I need to visit my local bike shop again and have a look around.
It would take some time though, before I can afford one... I'm a stay-at-home mum and we really live on a small income, so all the luxuries had to fly out he window. Thank god I had the road bike from before I got married.
My husband was so sweet recently. When I finally decided to get back into 'serious' exercise and to use the bike again for burning fat rather than just commuting with my daughter, he bought me a bike computer for mother's day! It is really bottom range and not as nice as the one that got stolen off my bike 4 years ago, but it works! There is nothing as motivating as seeing the miles tick away as you ride.0 -

good for you and i was not saying that in a bad way was just trying to motivate you to do it, because i know you can:D0 -

My hubby has occasionally topped out at >250#s and not had issues with his trainer. Keep an eye on Craig's List--like bikes, trainers are one of those things that some folks buy and use briefly, only to sell later on.
As for the riding in the rain thing, I've done it, never with issue. Even during deluge. Last Fall I was out for a 40 miler and the skies opened up 10 miles in (this happens sometimes on the Lake MI lakeshore...weather can be unpredictable). Since I was going to get wet, anyhow, I decided to continue on my ride. The only real negative was that the temps dropped, so I was cold and wet. But my tires were fine on the road (skinny tires aren't nearly as slippery-when-wet as some might think...just don't go whipping around corners and plan approaches to stop signs well in advance, since braking power is diminished with wet rims. Someday all my bikes will have disc brakes, for this reason). As long as you're dressed for it a ride in the rain can be sorta fun. I especially like to hit gravel/dirt roads on my cyclocross bike and get a little muddy...but I'm sorta weird, that way. :laugh:0 -
If I know it is going to rain I usually won't go out on my bike. However I have gotten caught in some pretty good storms including a bad hail storm one time. It's not that bad.0
-
I have been caugth in the rain before, but I don't trust the brakes. It is really scary. Disk brakes will be great. The Florida rain is really hectic - semi-monsoon style and visibility really goes down.
Before, I lived in London, England and commuted to work. Rain, snow, everything because my bike and I were equipped for it. I am not equipped here for rain riding.
Really, I know it isn't safe. I'm an old biker.0 -
Re: the axle...most bike trainers will come with a very strong one that you just replace your regular one with.0
