Did you know The Greek word "gymnasium" means "to exercise naked". In Ancient Greece, gymnasts wore no clothes.

The capital city of South Dakota is not pronounced like the French name Pierre (even though the founder of the city was French and named after him). South Dakotans pronounce it "pier" as in a pier on a lake. My hubby lived there and we go to SD several times per year. I hear this city mispronounced almost every time I go there by out of staters.

You know what's funny? I knew that since 1st or 2nd grade. I have no idea why, but any time I think of that fact, I think of the gym at that school. The teacher must have told us what the word means at some point, and of course, it stuck.

^^^^^^^They ALSO used to compete in the Olympic's nude. But you have to remember, there was not the huge population of obese people there is today. The athlete's bodies probably looked much like our's do today. But, can you imagine pole-vaulting..what if your "dangling bit's" hit the bar??? Ouch!

That's why I always like visiting local places and listening to local radio when I travel. I learned that over 20 years ago, just by watching the local news in a motel. Took FOREVER to figure out what they were referring to.

Also, people in Tennessee tend to accent the first syllable--TENNessee, not TennesSEE. (Any Tennesseans here? Am I right?)

    2. Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks, otherwise it will digest itself.

-There are more vending machines in Japan than there are people in New Zealand.

-We have never been more than 0.2% of the way down into Earth.

-Cats spend 70% of the lives asleep.

-The division symbol ( ÷) is actually called an "obelus."

-People with Foreign Accent Syndrome speak their native language with a foreign accent and can't help it.

-By the time you finish saying "I Love You," about 20,000 cells in your body will have died and been replaced with new ones.

The mask used in the original Halloween film was really just a Reagan mask painted white.

Back in the Warring Era of Japan, Shinobi (ninja) and Samurai worked together in battle. Samurai were also so high up on the class system that they had the power to cut anyone's head off for any reason when walking the streets. It also was not uncommon for Samurai and the boys/young men they were training to be Samurai to have intimate relationships well past their training years.

High heels were originally meant for men to wear.

The inverted cross used mostly by rebels and "satanists" is actually called the St Peter's Cross. St Peter was sentenced to be crucified but, feeling he was not worthy of a death so similar to Jesus, asked that his cross be upside down. So really it has nothing to do with the devil.

There is such a thing as a red raccoon. (useless but I never knew this until one came and pilfered food off our front porch one night)

It's theorized you only dream somewhere within the last 10-15 minutes before you wake up.

Even if spayed and neutered, cats (and probably dogs) can still exhibit the behavior of being in heat or needing to mate and will act it out unless taught otherwise by their owners.

I'm a well of "I didn't really need to know that but whatever" facts.

I thought it was a mask of Capt Kirk/William Shatner .
