Drinking Liquids.. During Eating Food.. After Eating Food?

Just read into something after a guy at work told me that I shouldn't be drinking anything after eating... he pretty much stated the exact same thing as what I read below.. what's everyones thoughts on this, and what do you follow?
"the stomach needs acid to digest foods properly. When water is presented to your system during a meal, it fools the system into thinking that the liquid is acid and therefore shuts off production thereof. Yes, you will have wet food going down and it will eventually digest but not as efficiently as the the body's natural way. Consider that if the body still produced acid during the meal, The water would dilute the acid and make it less effective. Therefore, no liquid during food intake"

I don't care. After my meal, I'm thirsty as hell!0

I read the same thing. No drinking 20 minutes before and after your meal makes your stomach produce more acid and helps the metabolism. Trying to do so, but must admit that it's difficult for me not to drink while eating.. I feel really thirsty..0

Very interesting. I have a friend who deliberately stops consuming liquids 15 minutes prior to eating because he believes something very similar -- it disruptes the body's natural digestion/acid production. I've tried it, but it's difficult for me --I'm always drinking a lot of water -- especially when I eat. I believe the ONE time I was successful at not drinking, lol, I noticed that my digestion seemed more calm (I have digestive issues, so I'm ultra sensitive to any disturbances).0

I've hear of this as well, but I haven't done much research on it myself. It definitely makes sense though. Would you mind sourcing the excerpt you used?0

I always drink liquids during my meals, usually water or milk. I have so much acid in my stomach all the time, I'm taking 3 different prescription medications every day just to cut back on acid production. If you are having hot, spicy foods or high acid food like tomato sauce, you should at least drink a little milk with it to help coat your stomach and stop the burn in your mouth and throat.0

I read up on this and spoke to my biology teacher - she told me similar to this:
You probably know that your digestive tract depends upon compounds called digestive enzymes -- these are proteins produced by the cells in your gut and accessory organs -- to help you break down your food. Drinking with your meals does technically dilute them, but it doesn't negatively impact the rate of digestion in the least.
Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are proteins that you make and secrete throughout your digestive tract. They're in everything from saliva -- which contains a starch-digesting enzyme -- to the lining of your small intestine. You use them to help you break down the large nutrient molecules in the foods you eat into smaller molecules that you can absorb into your bloodstream. Technically, digestive enzymes don't actually do the digesting; water and acid react with your food. The enzymes merely facilitate and speed the process.

Water and Juice
You've probably heard that it's a good idea to drink plenty of water each day, and may drink water or juice with your meals. However, you might wonder whether doing so will dilute your digestive enzymes and make digestion less efficient. Technically, drinking with your meals does dilute the enzymes -- any time you add water or liquid to a mixture, you make it more dilute. However, it's not a problem because the concentration of enzymes isn't important to the rate of digestion.
Enzyme Concentration
In chemistry, the rate of a reaction depends upon the concentration of certain key reactants. With regard to digestion, the key reactants are food molecules, water, and acid. While you need enzymes to speed up the reaction, the concentration of the enzymes doesn't affect the rate of reaction -- this is true both in digestion and in other enzyme-facilitated reactions.
Benefits
Actually, far from making digestion less efficient, drinking water or juice with your meal can actually make digestion more efficient. This is because digestion of all nutrient molecules is heavily water-dependent, and while you can secrete large quantities of water into your gut each day, you need to replenish the supply in order to continue to do so. Aim for at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water each day, and try to drink with each meal.

Most of the sites I've seen that say don't drink water with meals appear to be blogs, or quoting non medical websites. The link above is from the Mayo Clinic website and the answer is from an MD, and it says drinking water with your meal actually aids digestion.
I forgot to say that my gastroenterologist says that eating frequent meals during the day is actually bad for your digestion, because it doesn't give your system time to rest in between meals. Maybe that's why some folks say eating frequently is good for losing weight, because it doesn't allow the food to be digested properly? I think I'd rather eat less frequently and have less stomach trouble.0 -

Of course every one is different : ) I've read that certain blood types are known for having distinctly low levels of stomach acid, particularly Type As (positive or negative is apparently irrelevant). So, in contrast, I guess that would mean other types have much higher levels... unless, of course, you totally destroy this theory by revealing your a Type A, lol.0 -

Nope, I'm O+0 -
I have read the same thing....but I also read to drink a glass of water before you eat. Who really knows what to do??
Good question though....I wonder myself0 -
I sip on water all day long AND enjoy coffee with my breakfast or a glass of wine with dinner ...... lost 40+ lbs so far ..... all things in moderation ...... don't really think it makes a difference :drinker:0
