Diet Soda (for those who gave it up)

That's what I was thinking, for people who might drink caffeinated coke's. I don't drink caffeine at all. I like tea, but I have decaff teasounds like the headaches are due to caffeine withdrawal? I used to get that once I stopped drinking coffee every day!0

A lot of people I've seen around seem to equate drinking diet soda with drinking the blood of children. Happy to see there are lots of people in this thread who aren't that swift to rush to judgment about diet soda drinkers.
I doubt it's excellent for your health if you down it like a maniac, but imo it's a great alternative to regular soda, and the first step to weaning yourself off of it entirely (if you even choose to). I don't think a soda here and there has killed anyone. Enjoy yourself.
Personally, I was drinking nothing but water the week before last, then when I had a soda again, the most noticeable effect was that I had to pee way more often. But I haven't noticed the apparent appetite increase a lot of people report. It differs among individuals, and that's no surprise.0 -
My stomach has gotten a lot nicer. Even though I gained a little bit weight after cutting it out, I can clearly see my abs a lot better now. I couldn't that at all before!! And it is not much like a balloon anymore xD
I crave more candy now, but I can limit the intake.0 -
Im gonna give it up for 30 days to see how I feel without it. I love it and its causing me no problems. I am just doing it to try it out. I am giving up most artificial things as well (no more splenda in coffee).
If I notice positive changes, I will say goodbye to it, if I feel the same, I will go back to it. (one can a day)0 -
I gave up diet soda, but I do still drink one occasionally (like once a week). I was drinking about 3 cans a day. I was having some sharp pains in my side and I was tired. I was getting headaches as well. I refused to believe that any of these things were the result of diet soda, but now that I have really cut back all of those things have stopped. So maybe it was the soda, maybe it wasn't but overall I have felt a lot better since I quit drinking it on a daily basis.0

Probably the only one but I feel much better days I drink coke zero - I eat less, I eat less junk in particular, I have more energy.
I wish I DID have problems like headaches because I know its not good for you really but I just feel great when I drink it0 -

I don't think anyone would wish to have headaches lol.
I know people who get headaches frequently and I feel really bad for them.0 -
M seriously addicted to diet soda and get the headaches, probably from the caffeine withdrawals. I need to try and wean myself off I guess.0

I gave it up when I had some wisdom teeth pulled. It was only then that I realized my acid reflux was 90% gone. I cant drink anything fizzy now because it gives me very painful indigestion.0

A lot of people give up diet soda for all the headaches, others, the chemicals. I love diet soda...it is a good alternative to water for me. I still drink a ton of water a day. I am drinking about 2 cans a day, not a huge amount, but still a decent amount.
My question is for the people who have given it up (I want people who to respond with no headache issues from diet soda). How do you feel now? Do you feel the same?
I know diet soda can trick some people into craving more food.....I was never like this either.
You should try Zevia!! It's more natural and tastes great!!
So, I do drink Zevia but other than that, no soda for this gal. It has been about 6 months since my last Coke Zero (which I loved!!) but the last time I had one (about six months ago) it literally felt like it was burning my mouth!! I don't think it was just the carbonation, so it must have been the chemicals or whatever. Then, for about 2 weeks after drinking it, my mouth felt soooo dry!! And for a week it had left the feeling you get when you burn your tongue from super hot coffee... except that feeling lasted an entire week!! After experiencing those 2 weeks after drinking the Coke Zero, I will never drink the stuff again. Granted, I still liked the taste of it but it wasn't worth the burnt mouth feeling and the extreme dry mouth. I seriously contemplated going to the doctor because of the dry mouth!! I knew he'd just say to drink more water, so that's all I could really do. Before my last Coke Zero, it had probably been about a year since I had last had a diet soda. I don't know if my reaction to it was so extreme because of the year without or what exactly but I will never ever drink any again (unless it's Zevia because for some reason, that doesn't have that effect on me!!)
As for how I feel without soda, I don't know if it's because of the soda or because I've been eating better but I feel a lot more energetic and I no longer feel the need to take near daily naps. I hope that helps!!0 -
I gave it up for 2.5 months. I felt no better or worse. I didn't have any changes to my body at all. I didn't lose any weight by drinking more water...nothing happened. So, after depriving myself for 2.5 months I started back with just 1-2 cans a day. Occasionally I will have 3 or so, but I try to stick to just 1-2 cans a day.
I experimented by not taking my heartburn medicine to see if the Diet Coke was the cause of that. Well, after 6 days of no meds I had to start them back up. The Diet Coke was not the cause of my heartburn! I did have decreased heartburn, but it didn't totally go away by not drinking Diet Coke.
So, with no real benefit of not drinking Diet Coke and still craving it most days, I started it back up and feel just fine!!
Good luck!0 -
you might want to give zero calorie drinks a try ; such as power aid zero pepsi zero and I think there is also a coke zero . Also try some of those "vita-waters' "0
-
I gave it up for 3 months. I, now, drink a soda now and then when i start to get a migraine due to caffeine withdrawal.0

Ingredients of diet soda = bad health and increased risk for bad things. Why bother?0
-
I gave it up and sleep much better because I am sensitive to the caffeine in diet soda. I know there are caffeine free versions but I didn't enjoy them as much.0

Stevis has flovored drops....it's way better for you. They even have rootbeer. It's not soda...but a great drink anyway!0
-
almond milk? where can I find that at, a health-food store or a grocery store?0

I'm glad to read that you did lose the need for the jolt and fizz in time. I have tried to give it up a couple of times, and found that as the week progressed I became tireder and tireder. I'll try and again and hang in there. Because, I also found that I dropped weight when I gave of the diet/caf soda.
It's a lot of work to eat healthy and take care of oneself. But I've got to do it.0 -
Kroger's grocery store carries it in their health food section. There is even a
Almond light - I think 60 calories for 8 ozs.

I was drinking about a 6-pack a day of Diet Coke. My husband read an article about how bad it is for you, and he nagged into giving it up. When I gave it up, I lost 15 pounds without dieting. I was shocked because I had assumed I would gain. Thanks, honey! I totally avoid diet soda and all artificial sweeteners(including the natural ones like stevia) for fear of falling back into my addiction. Unfortunately, I still get headaches.
Reading the comments is making me want a Diet Coke -- guess I am still addicted! Do they actually put coke in that stuff?!0 -
I drank diet soda every day, but only with my supper. I gave up diet soda because I made a conscious effort to avoid any kind of carbonation. I have learned that carbonation seemed to give me a distorted 'full' feeling.. from liquid and gas and not from good nutrition. I have found that I don't seem as tempted to 'nibble' between meals and enjoy food more as I'm not 'washing away' flavours between bites and am getting full from my food rather than drink. I don't drink with my meals any more either.. I drink lots of water, up to 1/2 hour before a meal and after 1/2 hour after a meal. If I still want a flavoured beverage (rare) I opt for a crystal light or juice. Generally speaking, the only time I've really wanted a flavoured beverage is as a mix for alcohol (extremely rare, though I do make a great margarita with lime crystal light and tequila!). It's strange, I have never craved the diet soda and almost chuckle to myself when I see the 'pop and chip' aisle in the grocery store.. it's like the stuff is totally foreign to me now.0

Diet soda fills me up & stops me craving sweet things, I've cut down a lot but that's because of financial reasons rather than health reasons. When I had diet soda this week I realised I felt way more awake after it as well. I miss it!0
-
I gave up soda completely for about 2 months. I didn't notice any difference in the way I feel. It may or may not have contributed to my weightloss. Diet soda has never made me crave sweets, in fact it is the opposite. Sweets do not taste good with diet soda. Since it didn't seem to have an affect on me physically, I have started drinking it again when I go out to eat. However, I have found that I don't miss it at home so I do not buy it when grocery shopping.0

I had to give up caffine for medical reasons, had been drinking real coffee and real diet coke, switched to decafe coffee and caffine free diet coke and lost 12 pounds without dieting. I have a caffine free diet coke once in awhile now, but mostly just drink water.0

why bother eating a candy bar?
why bother eating fried chicken?
I just really enjoy it.0 -
I haven't seen any difference in weight as yet but headaches have certainly lessened and that's just in one week!0

diet soda keeps me on track.0

A few years ago, I drank one two liter of Diet 7-up every day. Then I met a nutritionist who basically had a cow when she heard this. So, long story short, I no longer drink it. Once a year I might have a sip, but when I do, I imagine the soda attacking and destroying my nerves, causing MS, lupus, and other atrocities. I don't try for this image in my brain, but after studying so much about it and listening to my nutritionist go on and on about it, I don't miss it -- not even at all.
It really is poison, and I wish more people would accept how dangerous it is for your body. It also made me crave more sweets and generally bad stuff...0 -
