Super fit people and motivation

I have a few friends who obviously have their health and fitness under control; some are even personal trainers. When I see their workout statuses, I can't quite decide whether or not to comment.

"SuchAndSuch just burned 1638 calories doing one-handed pull ups."

At this point, I feel lke my "wtg!" doesn't really have an impact.

Fit people, what are your thoughts on this? Does the affirmation matter to you?

It's not a big deal if you don't comment, but if NOBODY commented I would be a sad panda.

I've actually had similar thoughts, lol. I figure i just cheer everyone on, in whatever they are doing. Although im reaching a "i dont give a f**k " point about things. Prepare for your ears to bleed, lol

I try to support all. I give the WTG's. We have some mutual friends. I see the 1000+ burn as well. First off I'm very impressed and jealous. These get the *poms poms raised in the air , high kick YAY* from me. Yes I have no shame.

The impact of motivation comes from the the receiver's perception.
Remember, if the positive nature is always present from you, then the perception is always greater.

I agree with ya, Cliff. This is definitely best practice. Just curious what some of the MFP elite might have to say.

i go through my friend list and the posts everyday. I absolutely try to put a comment of encouragement on everyone that does anything. The ones walking 20 minutes at a 2 mile an hour pace probably need encouragement way more than the high achievers. They need a start, they need the affirmation. I am especially mindful of anyone that has no comments. YOu just dont know what someones background is. They may not have ever been encouraged, they may have always been in the shadow of an shining sibling, they may have some serious pain in their past and they are here for support. This site is so much more than the logging and exercise. It is being with a group of people that struggle like you have. That have a history of using food for more than nourishment. I am talking about the ones with a lot of weight to lose, not so much the ten and under. When i go through my friend list and someone hasn't logged in for a few days i contact them.. I know the wtg's seem silly but we just don't know how much it might mean to someone. Any the bonus is that when i am spending time in the evening doing this I AM not eating!!!!

Not that I am super-fit - but I do teach a fitness class. I became an instructor in order to become even MORE accountable to work out as well as encourage others to do the same.

Speaking from experience - EVERY SINGLE ATTA BOY (or gal) is appreciated deeply. Every last one. Even from those people whom I consider to be the "elite" of fitness. Even from those struggling. 7 months ago I was really struggling. Today, I'm still struggling. I will probably always struggle. Every little bit of encouragement is still encouragment.

I'm not superfit or anything.....my workouts consist of walking, etc.., but when I was more active on MFP I loved the motivation. It just feels good when others recognize your effort. :blushing:

it makes me feel good no matter what for someone to acknowledge my work. that said.... i don't expect you all to sit around all day and comment on everything i do. and i try to give that encouragement back, but that said...i can't always.

no matter how i look or how i feel or how easy a workout is for me, i appreciate it when someone takes the time to post, even if it's just a smiley

I don't know if I would categorize myself as "super fit" but I do exercise 6 days a week and burn a lot of calories doing so. I would be really sad if no one ever commented. I exercise for my own benefit, but my MFP friends are a part of my life and the support is really motivating for me.

I'm not super fit, but I am proud of my accomplishments and usually have 600+ calorie burns. I have a few friends that are good about encouraging me, but I try to post on one thing per person per day and find I have more commentless posts than anything. Now, I don't expect those 4 or 5 friends to fill up everything so maybe I just need more friends.

The one think I REFUSE to comment on are people with closed diaries. Sure, I see you ate under your calorie goal, but did you eat 600 calories or 1197? If I can't see what your calorie goal is and how much you ate and what content you ate, I won't say "GREAT JOB!" I know I don't eat the best but I try to make good choices and always eat 1200-1300 calories.

But yes, no matter how fit I am, it feels good to be recognized.

A more general point: Most of my MFP "friends" don't comment on the announcements MFP posts in regard to me so I'm getting tired of cheering them on. I always have to be selective because there are so many and my time is limited. I usually congratulate people for logging in consistently or dropping a pound and only occasionally for major calorie burns because I never know whether the report is accurate.

My job consists of 12-15 hour in front of the computer and 5 nights/week in a hotel. So far, I'm doing really well in term of my fitness goals. Having the positive encouragements does help get me started. Once I'm on a roll, nothing can stop me.

Don't get me wrong. I still need all those encouragements. Those words help me feel that I'm not a crazy guy doing it all by myself in a hotel room. Every "wtg" and every "good job" really help... And please keep giving them... The world needs more positive things.
