Hello! I'm new to MFP and am hoping this site/app will provide me with tools and connections to help me achieve my fitness goals. I've been on a workout plan for the past six months and while working with trainers and working out five times a week, I've managed to gain (not lose) ten pounds.

I love doing the workouts and having a trainer. I've even enjoyed trying new strategies nutritionally. That said, I have been imperfect at best with dieting and it's showing in my lack of overall weight loss. Any advice or guidance on getting my metabolism burning and losing pounds is welcomed!

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the effects of chronic stress have finally taken a toll on my weight. I realize I've gained muscle mass, but my goal is not to bulk.

I'm considering going back to a low-carb, perhaps gluten-free lifestyle, ultimately. Feedback?

Looking forward to reading all of your posts too!

Have you looked into doing yoga ? Its very good on reducing stress and keeping a toned body.

That's a good idea! I used to go to yoga and loved it. I should probably look into a few classes. The only issue has been that I can relax in the moment, but it doesn't carry over into a lifestyle change. At least, not yet. :-) Hoping to get there!

I have tried the low-carb thing and it seemed to work for me...as long as I stuck with it. I followed The South Beach Diet. I have Hypo-Thyroidism which is not good for weigh loss... Keep watching what you eat and remember to exercise. Focus on how you look and how your clothes feel. Let that indicate what is going on instead of the numbers on the scale. And...drink LOTS of water. Sounds funny but it seems to make me appear thinner...

@ Lisa...a low carb lifestyle has ALWAYS been effective for me being hypothyroid. AGREE! I'm cutting back on all things simple carb right now and am focusing on eating limited amounts of complex carbs. You are absolutely right with your comments. :-)
The positive thing for me is that my TSH and T3/T4s are FINALLY at the right spot so I'm hoping weight loss kicks in once I've tackled my emotional eating demons. (*winks*)

Has your doctor suggested anything due to your thyroid condition? They might me best to discuss this with. With that said, are you tracking your food? Sounds like you're super motivated with your workouts. Apply that to your eating. Tracking things find something that works or doesn't and go from there.

Would definitely ask the doctor too.

    Good luck!
  • Yoga and walking are great for slimming down without bulking up :) I can't get to a class but I use the Biggest Loser game on my xBox which has a yoga workout and it is awesome and very customizable. It's tough having health conditions fighting against you, good luck and add me if you like.
  • Articfox,

Hi. I have noticed your weightloss and that is awesome. Can you give suggestions or examples as to what you are eating to ad in this weightloss.

    Thanks

Gluten free can be very helpful if you have Hashimoto's.... just try not to substitute gluten free cookies and snacks for the real stuff. Just focus on eating naturally gluten free. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in April, and found that gluten free substitutes bother my stomach just as much as the gluten did. So now I eat naturally gluten free, and I have lost about 15lbs so far!

Now that my body is getting straightened out with my diet I have finally started to exercise again. I am hoping to drop a lot more weight in the next 6-9 months....

There is a good gluten free group here, you should join!

    Good luck!

This has all been great advice - but I will add.

First - I think support is great. I had a lot of issues with weight loss (went from 135 in my late 20's to 260 in my late 30's), I had done many diets, none with any real success and - none with any help from friends (until now). Please feel free to add me.

Second - I could never understand why I was gaining. I think the first step is to find your problem areas and then work from there. I knew I did not eat a lot, but found my eating habits and my SUGAR intake were terrible. Now that I have addressed those, I have been slowly but surely losing some pounds (22 so far).

Third - Be positive... Not discouraged. We are all reaching for the same goal on here and I feel confident in saying we will all help you through any tough times so long as you stay on and communicate with us. All I ask is that my friends on here do the same for me.

Thank you for all of the guidance here! This is excellent advice!!!
I think the key issue I face is in the nutritional area...considering all the working out I do, I can't imagine what my weight would be if I didn't work out.
So, I'm going to focus there. I have considered gluten free and low carb/sugar. In the past, those cuts in my diet are what worked best.

My thyroid doc tells me to eat a Mediterranean diet. I like to think that a combination of that, plus a lowered carb regimen would help. I KNOW I can't eat pasta without gaining. Maybe gluten free pasta, but in small doses. :-)

    Thoughts?
