gallbladder removal surgery next week

Im having my gallbladder removed next week. Ive already lost 20 pounds due to my bland no fat diet i was told to follow to avoid gallbladder attacks. I wont be allowed to exercise for about 4-6wks after surgery. Not to mention i javent been able to exercise for about a month now. But i have heard some stories about people gaining weight after surgery. Some as much as 45lbs. Im pleased with my progress and i am hoping that my body does just the opposite and i contine to drop. Anyone ever have a lap chole done before? And how was it? When did u start exercising again? Any weight gain/loss?

I had it done in April of 2010. It was the first time I ever had surgery and, honestly, it was super easy. I came home and slept that entire day and by the next day I was feeling almost normal. There was barely any pain, it just felt like I over strained my muscles a little bit.

I didn't gain any additional weight after surgery, although I got pregnant with my third child about 3 months after the surgery and gained weight then. But the same amount as pregnancy #2.

I wasn't healthy then, so I didn't exercise much. But I was back to my normal activities very shortly. I was definitely glad to get the surgery. It's wonderful not to have to worry about those awful gallbladder attacks anymore.

Best of luck with your surgery!

I had the surgery 18 years ago and if you could say it was a good thing to have surgery this was. I had a diseased gallbladder for a while and did not know it until the attacks. I had already lost weight and sleep from the symptoms but I just kept “walking it off”.

Before the doctor officially gave me a medical release I was 150% better than the six or so months before. You will be surprised at how having this malfunctioning part of your body remove will give you back your life.

On a side note some people have a little trouble with getting their digestive system back on track. I can tell you it will come with time if it affects you.
  • I had mine taken out over 10 years ago. You will feel so much better afterward - those late night several time a week painful attacks were for the birds. I did not know how to live a healthy balanced life back then, so that was not the cause of my slow but steady weight gain over the years (i was just lazy and ate too darn much). I've lost nearly 100 pounds in the past 18 months - so the surgery does not affect your ability to lose weight. What sits between your ears affects your ability to lose weight. Stay strong and keep at it. Just because you can't exercise after the surgey doesn't give you an excuse to go back to unhealthy eating habits. Keep tracking your calories and stay on MFP. Good luck with your surgery!!

I had my gallbladder removed in January of this year. Are you not having it done laproscopically? If you are the recovery time is much less and you should be able to be up and about after a couple days. I had mine done on a friday and I went back to work for a part of the day by Tuesday. They suggest you start walking after a couple days because light activity actually helps your body heal. I went back to jogging after 2 weeks, though I did notice I was not at the same fitness level that I was. My problem was that after my surgery I ate a lot of the high fat foods that I couldn't eat before my surgery. But honestly if you are having a Lap surgery there is no reason you would have to wait 4-6 weeks.
  • Hi, it will be two months since I have had my gallbladder removed. I did have the lap chole done, but my surgeon said i shpuld wait the 6 weeks before doing any type of exercise due to one incision still open. That one has closed off completely already and I am ready to begin my workouts again. Thanks to all who helped!
