Any moms of pre-teens?

Just wondering if there were any moms of pre-teens (ages 10-12) on MFP besides me?
I have a 10 year-old son who is a full-fledged pre-teenager now. It's a...joy to parent him, lol. Overnight, I went from being his hero to being "the enemy". Everything I say is wrong or met with an exaggerated eyeroll or a door being slammed in my face. My only respite is that I still have my six year-old son who thinks I could lasso the moon at this point. And seriously, boys are JUST as moody as girls. Like I said, a real joy! But I love him.

Not a parent of a pre-teen (well, not a parent at all, actually), but take solace in the fact that once these years are over, you guys will be best friends. At 23, I am so lucky to have the relationship that I do with my parents, but I do shudder to think at the fights we had over the decade or so. One day we just sort of woke up and it was like, "alright, we're friends now." It does get better!
If you don't kill them first, that is.0 -
yep, 11 year old girl with full blown mood swings, attitude, the lot! Love her to bits especially when she's sleeping/at school/watching telly! otherwise we fall out a lot. I'm a psychololgist and my husbands a teacher and we can't tame her between us! Actually I'm being unfair - she's generally very lovely but sometimes when i ask her to do something totally unreasonable (!) - you know like brush her hair before school - she just flips and I'm the worst person in the world for suggesting it and I don't understand anything and how would I like it, accompanied by slamming doors, stamping feet and so on! It's fun - kind of!0

Here to tell you that it gets worse! I have a 19 and 17 year old, both girls! I'm a single parent so I had to let lay down the rules early and let them know that I'm the QUEEN B around here. Also make sure they know that its your house and that you are letting them borrow the room they sleep in! (LOL, I'm for real)
Now its better! We talk about everything but I'm not their friend because I've learned that children have a tenancy to forget you are the parent and lose their DAM mind!0 -
I have twins that just turned 13.....and 15 year old....and a sweet baby girl of 6!! ALL GIRLS!!! I feel your pain!!! And you are not alone!!0

my 4 year old daughter THINKS shes a teen...does that count? lol0

I have a ten year old boy. So far I'm still cool, and he's nearly 11!0

Yes, my son just turned 12 this weekend and has become the brooding sullen sterotype. Luckily we have a pretty good communication foundation that I just ask him if something is really wrong or if he is just being a grumpy teenager. I miss my happy little boy, this grumpy teen can work my nerves.0

My youngest is 12...I feel your...joy?!? I have threatend to remove her bedroom door if she slams it one more time (which I will do, she can have a curtain hung for privacy, that you can't slam)...
I also have 2 teenagers, and 3 in their 20's...the light at the end of the tunnnel is that they become human again around 19...
I also have 3 boys and 3 girls, they are all just as moody...0 -
I have a 12 year old daughter. She is the love of my life and pretty good haha. Im very blessed.0

My oldest son will turn 9 in October. No attitude yet, but he's starting to get a mustache??!!! WTH??!!0
-
Yep!! And I feel your pain!!:) I have a 13 yr old daughter, a 11 yr old son and a 9 yr old son:)0

My daughter just turned 14, I wish I could tell you it gets better but that would be a lie. At this age my daughter is the Queen of the eye roll and sigh!
When she is good she is very very good, when she is moody it really tries your patience.
She is my world but you have to let them know you are the parent and that respect goes both ways in a family.
Best of luck!

(Step)Mom of a 9, will be 10 year old girly-girl in September. Just got married in March so it's ALL new for me as I have 3 little boys. She IS sweet but very manipulative like her mother so it causes a strain in my relationship in getting close with her. If she does not get her way she acts out (her dad won't put up with it, but she'll run and tell her mom - we have her all but 2 days out of the month so mom is her "hero"). Definitely tough since we're the more strict household.0

I'm a single mom of a 10 year old girl. She will be 11 this summer and I recently found out how embarassing and un-cool I am. Kind of a blow to my ego, but I'll get over it.0

I have an 11 year old boy and he is a really good kid! Rarely do I get any attitude out of him, on the other hand my 9 1/2 year old daughter is another sotry! She can be an angel on minute and the exact opposite the next! I am hoping it is just hormones and that it will pass, but who knows. I have 3 boys and 2 girls and I can honelstly say that my boys are easier than my 2 girls. Anyway I too feel your pain!0

I had one of each and my son was waaaaay more moody than my daughter ever could be. As a matter of fact, my daughter was never the "typical" pre-teen/teen. I waited for the day when door-slamming and eye-rolling would be a common occurrence and that never happened. My son, on the other hand...well, let's just say he was a JOY to live with. I do love him dearly, though.0

That doesn't inspire me to have children at all.0
-
Nope, none here.
Just kidding. I've got a 10 year old daughter in addition to my 16 year old son.0 -
I have a 12 year old and a 16 year old. There is no disrespect in our house...no eye rolling, no door slamming (unless you want to lose your door) no back talk.
I have set expectations...and they are followed. My daughters are in no way perfect...but I do think the "teenage years" is exaggerated because of TV.
My daughters have learned ...walk the walk..and you get rewarded...(special dinners, a new pair of clothing..ect)...you dont walk the walk...punishment (phones get removed, radios get removed, no tv...ect)
Best of luck to you0 -
I have an 11 year old daughter (she'll be 12 next month). And I tell ya, the worries the kids have now days is NOTHING like the ones I had. I was still playing with barbies at that age. She's into texting and makeup. But I have to say, I am very lucky because my kids are pretty level-headed and are very well-behaved.
I also have a 9 year old son and 8 year old daughter....so I'm in for a long ride for the next 10 years of teen-hood. lol0 -
Not an official pre-teen, but an 8 (almost 9) year old daughter who is just as moody and dramatic as any teenager I have ever seen. Can't wait for puberty! NOT!0
-
My son is 12 (13 in September) and ugggg! I love him to death but there are days where I want to leave him on the side of the road (I would never do this!). My son tries to act all moody and I just look at him and go I know your not mad and your just acting ticked off and then I do something to make him laugh. I feel like it is an act in a lot of ways for attention.0

Reading these posts makes me feel a bit better about my daughter who will be 11 this year. Just last night her 6 year old brother simply asked her a question.. and like usual.. she ignored him. So I asked her to quit being so rude. He asked her again.. and she again ignored him.. since it was near bedtime I asked her to go put her book she was reading in her room and get ready for bed. She refused and sat there.. finally she got up and went to her room, but didn't come out. I had to go get her and make her get her pajamas on and go brush her teeth. It was done with lots of stomping and I hate you's.. parenting is fun!!0

We did this a couple of years ago (our daughter is now almost 12) and left the door off for about 4 months. It really solved the door-slamming problem.
Glad to hear my kid isn't the only one who acts this way at times. Most of the time she is a lovely, sweet, funny, wonderful girl!0 -
I have a 24 year old daughter, so I KNOW how bad it can get! My 11 year old daughter is just as sweet as ever still, hoping to hold out as long as I can!0

Okay this is creepy because you just described my life! I have an 11-year-old girl and an almost 6-year-old son. My daughter is still very loving but only when she gets what she wants. If I keep her from her friends for too long, she turns into a very evil little person. She used to be such a sweet little angel . I'm terrified to see what the next few years are going to look like! Thankfully I still have my son on my side...for now.0
