Ankle pain from elliptical, what can I do?

I've been using the elliptical 4-6 days a week for a month. Yesterday I noticed pain in the back of my ankle after only 5 minutes on the elliptical. I had to cut my workout short because the pain kept getting worse. Afterward, my other ankle hurt but the pain is all around my ankle. Now I'm reading about achilles tendonitis, which could put me out of exercising for a few months. I REALLY don't want to, but I'm thinking I need to take a break? If that's so, is there anything I can do for cardio until my ankles feel better? Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm no expert, but if it were me I would try a different low-impact exercise (cycling really rips through those calories if you maintain a good high speed!) and see if the pain persisted. Though really, above all else, listen to your body! Ice it and take it one day at a time :)

I get some numbness in my feet, sometimes, when using the elliptical. I think it's just a short-person problem :(

Ok I can't coin this myself but according to Jillian Michaels, squat punches is a good cardio exercise when you have leg problems.

I have one of those Tony Little Gazelle that is similar to an elliptical and I have the problem with my feet burning really bad after I use it. I don't workout with it as much as I used to because it's alot of pressure on my ankles and feet.

It could be tendinitis. Repetitive motion with the same area of a body can wear down tendons and even cause tears. If it is severe, it will need to get checked out...
