Holidays - Road Trip - YIKES!

I have just recently started MFP and while it's only been a few days I feel better and want to make sure I stick to this and learn proper eating habits and change my life. We are starting to plan our holidays for the end of July which is a month away but I could use some help in how I deal with being away for a week and a half. We are going on a road trip so there will be lots of meals in the car and lots of eating out.
Any ideas of good snacks or meals that we could take or that would be easy to find just about anywhere??

Hi Angie,
I'm freaking out too. I also started a few days back but my trip starts tomorrow!! And it will last a month! But my trip is for work... and that might be even worse than a road trip.
As healthy snacks I'd suggest nuts, dried fruit (apricots, prunes), yogurt... and there is always a grocery store to stop by and get some fruit!0 -
Same here, have a vacation planned for next month. I'm definitely going to try to pack some fruit and find some healthy granola bars to bring as well. II'm also using Yelp to try to plan what restaurants we eat at. That's helpful since I can check out menus online and try my best to pre-plan. have a fantastic road trip!0

I just came back from a weekend trip, and that was hard enough. I am on a high protein diet, low carb, low fat.
The restaurants were very family style, fried and comfort foods. Funny enough, my best bet was the local grocery store to buy chunks of chicken, a side salad from McDonald's w/ Balsamic vinaigrette (Newman's Own.) I do high protein so I would get a burger and remove the buns (no condiments) and eat that.
I was able to get hamsteak for breakfast for one morning, and I got eggs on another morning. Fish fillets work well I find as well.
I checked out all restaurants ahead of time and planned my meals.
Another favorite of mine at restaurants is a steak with side veggies. I usually half my meal immediately and I can get under 300-400 calories.
Red Robin I will get the Simply Chicken protein style with a side of steamed broccoli. I get sides of lemon to season the veggies.
Good luck on your trip!
*Almost forgot, I also brought Greek Yogurts in a cooler and also brought several high protein snacks 130 cals 10 gram protein for when we were driving. I eat every 3 hours.0 -
I've gone for a few two day trips to the beach so far since I've been on my diet. For a short trip like that I just take the two days off my diet. I just don't go overboard. I'm leaving for a long trip next week for a wedding. I'm taking the day of the wedding off of my diet, but I'm going to try to stick to it the rest of the trip. It's a 12 hour road trip and some of the way I won't have internet on my phone (t-mo roaming, yay) So my plan is to take rice cakes with me in the car to munch on, when we stop to eat try to pick out the healthy choices, and write it down if I'm roaming. Stick to stuff like grilled chicken and veggies when you stop.0

I am heading out on a road trip one month from today and am really worried about trying to stay on track too! I'm going to log the whole time we are away, but I am concerned about all the eating out. I am scared of coming home 10 pounds heavier or something!!! So please keep us posted, those of you heading out sooner. I'd love to hear success stories about peeps who have done road trips/extended vacations!!0
