I was allotted 1200 calories from MFP but I have seen some people have their calories set according to their BMR. Which is better to go by???

If you change your goal to losing 1 lb/week, or even .5 lbs/week, how many calories does it give you? Over your BMR? Then go with that instead of 2 lbs/week.

BMR.....you should always eat at least your BMR.

I know, I'm a broken record, but there's no reason you can't eat below your BMR. It's up to you. You will not starve or hurt yourself at 1200. 2 lbs/week is considered a safe weight loss goal.

Yep. Safe to aim for but hard to achieve in practice. If you can eat at 1200 and keep it up without feeling like you need to binge or go over at parties or social events, enjoy! But if you want to make it easier on yourself, just aim for a slower loss. Besides, sometimes creating a deficit of 1000 calories/day will not drop the 2 lbs/week you're expecting. Then you get frustrated and give up because it's not worth the (hard) effort you're putting in.

I guess you cannot safely lose weight at all. Sorry!

Just kidding. Try the MFP rec you prefer and see how you feel. If you're miserable or unable to stop yourself from bingeing at parties, go higher.
