What is best? I need to add one to my diet for some fiber whilst i'm doing a protein diet.

I use both. And hemp hearts. The flaxseed is cheaper. I add it to my steel cut oats and smoothies. The flaxseed should be ground and stored in the fridge. Don't buy it if it's not in the fridge.
  • As far as weight loss is concerned both will do the job as both are good sources of fats.

Both are good but if you are sensitive to tree nuts, than leave chia seeds alone, they have a similar affect

    I mix the two. :-)
  • Hmm mixed responses. I may try the flax for now as they're cheaper. I have only found milled flaxseed, are they as good as ground?

milled = ground and vice versa.

The fat in ground flaxseed goes rancid quickly- so if you buy it already ground, don't buy too much of it and don't buy it unless it's refrigerated, as someone else said.

If it's whole flaxseeds, they don't have to be refrigerated, but you can't really digest them so you don't get all the benefits unless its ground. I grind a couple days worth at a time with a coffee grinder and keep the ground flax in the refrigerator in a jar.

If you just want added fiber, get this, really cheap when bought in bulk

I did not know any of this. Suppose I should throw out that bag of ground flaxseeds I bought 2 months ago. They were in the dry foods part of the store. :ohwell:

I don't want to tell you to throw out your food- taste it- it will taste funky and/or have a bitter aftertaste if its rancid.

If it were me, I would chuck it- but a package of flaxseed would never last me 2 months either way- I use it every day for breakfast.

Thanks for that! I will try that first and see how it goes, as it mainly is for the fiber. Hard to get enough through protein and veg!

Shoot, I just bought the dry flaxseed, not the refrigerated kind. Now I need a bunch of ideas on how to use it so that it doesn't go bad, before I am able to use it all.
please help me with some suggestions!!
also, does it add a taste to food? I thought it didn't, but someone today told me that it did.

thanks everyone up front for your help.

Flaxseed all the way!!! But you have to remember to freeze it or use it up quick because it goes bad quickly!

i prefer chia and hemp hearts.

flax has a natural nutty flavour.
