Hi guys

Arrrgghhh, I am so confused. Normally I am really good at working out calories per meal but I am stumped on this one!

I have bought a pack of Vitasia Chow Mein noodles (From Lidl). The whole pack weighs 250g. They are not the instant variey, they require boiling for 4 minutes (pretty instant in my opinion!).

The pack does not contain ANY information in regards to cals/fats/protein etc so I scanned in the barcode. It said 118 cals per 1/4 of a pack. I boiled up my 1/4 of a pack which now weighs 175g cooked.

Knowing my pasta/rice portion as I do (into my 6th month now), I thought there was alot of noodles to be going on with. So with the help of google I managed to come up with all sorts of calorie estimates, ranging from 118 to 400! Now, as much as I want these noodles, I'm not prepared to have 400 cals worth lol.

Can anyone help....... ?

Doesn't matter if they are raw or cooked, you already divided them into quarters.

Take that amount and it is 118 kcals. Ta Da.

If 175 is 1/4 of the pack, then that is 118 kcal.

I would say the 118 is for the 1/4 of the pack, the extra weight is just from the noodles absorbing the water.

Really? They weighed 62.5g dried and 175g cooked - Am I being really thick here? I don't get it..... I would love them to be 118 cals!

If you boiled them in water, there is no difference in the calories.

If you were cooking any type of pasta/macaroni/spaghetti, a standard serving is 2 ounces dry. So you weigh out the portion before you cook it. Because different pasta shapes cook up into different amounts (2 ounces of spaghetti might fit into a 1-cup measure, but 2 ounces of ziti might not), weighing it before cooking is the most accurate.

So how did the kind person who entered the details get the nutrional information?

I don't know who you are talking to, but you said you scanned it and it gave you 118 kcals per 1/4 pack. Go with it.

Yes I was going to say that, the values dont change when cooked, I got m and s fine noodles which are quite low in cals and the first time i did myself 2, omg its was so huge i had to gove half to the dog, you just dont reaslise how big they become when you cook them, but thats a good thing imo

Lol, thank goodness I haven't got a dog (I like my food).... but yes, I couldn't believe how much they filled out a plate! I thought because I can sort of eyeball a portion of pasta and rice nowadays that it was far too much. Google is evil !
