Hi all! I'm 5 foot exactly and having a hard time finding a bicycle that fits my height (and weight) I have to get a girls 24" bicycle (what the manufactures recommend). What do women my height get? I would like to go on mountain trails with my husband, once I lose a little bit more weight.

My husband went to a bike store and bought me a mountain bike a few years ago for Christmas. I am only half an inch taller than you and to tell you the truth I don't know how to tell you the size of my bike. I know it's a woman's bike not girls. It is a "Gary Fisher Marlin" that I can tell you! The store he bought it at was Performance Bicycle..of course there isn't one in your state..figures huh? Hope at least some of this was helpful

Go to a bike store and they can fit you for a quality bike in your size.

Agree with the above posters - go get fitted and look for Women Specific Bikes. I'm not sure what your budget it, but I have a Santa Cruz that I love. They make the Juliana - which is great for smaller framed folk. I have a pretty long reach - and ended up getting the Superlight. You can have the handlebars cut to a good size, too (for the width). Trek also makes WSD (Women Specific Designs) as does Rocky Mountain, and Gary Fischer. Probably more, too! :) If you don't want to spend a lot... maybe check REI for their brand. I hear people enjoy their Novarra bikes - I BET they make a WSD Mountain Bike. If you think you'll be biking a lot and want to get really into it - consider full suspension... if not, a hard tail is great! Hard tails climb well, are a little lighter, and still give you front end suspension which is nice for the downhill! Happy Biking!

i'm 5'0" like you. Trek is the only road (not mountain) bike that I've ever been able to fit. I have an aluminum frame. It has 27" wheels (standard size) and has a 19" frame. Women can get away with a bike that is slightly larger than a man can get away with

Just looked it up for women between 4'10" - 5'1" they recommend a 14" frame. That is the seat tube is 14"

Thank you so much for your replies! As I am just starting out, I haven't looked into it that much. I didn't know you could get fitted! That's awesome! When I lose a little bit more weight I will go down to REI again and check it out. Thanks!

Probably someone has already mentioned this, but a bike shop should be able to get you something that fits properly and is suitable for your use. Well worth the trip and the tips they will give you.

I'm 5'1". I have a Giant brand bicycle. I bought it at a bike shop. They recommended the size and me ride around the parking lot to see if it was comfortable. I don't know what size it is exactly but it is a women's bike, not a girl's. Go to a bike shop, or recreation store that actually has a sales associated that knows about bikes. They'll help you get a good bike.

Just beware that some bike shops will try to put you on a bigger bike if they don't have small women's bikes already in stock. Because the seat and handlebars are adjustable, a too-big bike can be okay, but not as good as a properly fitted one! If you look at a bikes specs online, it should list a "standover height", which you would want to be about 1 or 2 inches less than the length between the heel of your shoe to the crotch of your pants. When you try one out in the store, make sure that when you're off the seat, with your feet on the ground you do have a 1 to 2 inch clearance above the bar. (If you get one of the women's models with the sloped bar, this will not matter.)

I have a Giant Cypress bike, and I love it. I forgot the tube size, but it's either 14 or 16 inch (standover 29"), but I'm almost 5'4", so you'd want a 14 inch one.
