What does "bump" mean?

  • It's just a way of moving a thread back the first page of the forums to get more posts.

Here on MFP it tends to be used to "flag" a topic so it shows under "my topics" so you can find it easier later when you want to read it.
Forums generally are sorted by most recent posts, so the original user BUMPing their post brings it back to the top so more people can see it.
If you're on your computer at home CTRL-D to bookmark the thread does the same thing and you can check it as many times as you want, while avoiding a post that gets maybe 25 real "posts" over the 20 pages of 25 results 19 pages being "bump"

oops, I read it was a way to mark a thread you want under "My topics" to come back to later so that's how I have been using it. My bad, sorry folks

On here, it is. It's like internet forum bookmarking.

On other sites it's sometimes used to get folks to see YOUR post. But on here it's also used to sorta "bookmark" things for later reading.
