Bridging to 10K

I completed my second 5K this weekend. I'm still very slow, but they are getting ever so slightly easier to complete LOL. I decided that I really do better with a training program to work from so I'm going to start a 10K training program. It's only 6 weeks long! Does that seem like a short amount of time to anyone else? I took about 1.6 times the amount of time to do the C25K that it was supposed to take, so I'll likely do the same for this. But still, that's only 10 weeks to get up to 10K?

Oh, and holy cow...there was a marathon at the race too and I'm just SHOCKED at how fast those runners were. The winner was doing 6 minute miles for the MARATHON. Holy cow. Just WOW.

It does seem like a hoert time to get you up to 10k! Then again, I am thinking 8weeks for 5k is a short tie too! haha! my times are so slow, i am nowhere near the 5k and i am on week 6! but, i am doing the timing method so i may have to switch to distance and go back a few weeks and retrain! and this program has already taken me almost 8 weeks!

I did timing, not distance for C25K too. I couldn't actually run a 5K when I finished, but about a week later I was good. And yes, I took 13 weeks to do C25K LOL.

My 2 cents - if it takes you a litle longer - so what - you are still doing it! Go for it!!

What program are you using for the 10k? I've been searching but all I can find is the app for it by BlueFin, but since I don't have a smartphone or an apple products, I can't use the app. Any ideas? Thanks.

6 weeks is an acceptable time to complete the program. Of course if it takes you longer that is ok.

The standard for increasing mileage is no more than 10% per week. 10% per week for 6 weeks, brings you just over 10k.

Enjoy the program and have fun.

I just started trainging for a 10K a week ago. I used C25K and then switched to the C210K app and started at week 5 like the app suggested. The app I use is by Felt Tip. Here is the link to the Cool Running site: http://www.coolrunning.com/ For those that aren't able to use the apps you can print out the work out and if you search there may be some downloads for I-pods that give your cues as when to run or walk. Good luck to you!

Oh by the way the 10K app I use is 13 weeks total.

I'm using an app as well (Jog Log) but you should be able to find the program online.

I have done a program through Active.com and Sony for 10k training. They have mulitple distance training programs available and the one I signed up for is free.

I was amazed that once I was able to run for about 40-45 minutes how easy it was to increase my mileage. Ran my first 5K last Thanksgiving and my first 10K in February without a lot of extra training over the holidays.

I totally agree. Once I hit about 3 miles, adding on an extra 5-10 mins a week wan't as difficult as earlier in the training. I was able to get from 0.5 miles to a 10k in 10 weeks without a structured program. It's possible but the limitations of your body and time committment will play a factor in any training.

Interesting! I find it hard to believe, but hey, I'll try LOL!

Getting from being able to run 0k to 5k was much harder than getting from 5k to 10k for me.
