So I am going to be in California in August for a week. I've been all over the state and this will be my fourth trip to San Diego. (sis lives in Oceanside.) she has to work the first couple days I'm there do I need suggestions of things to do and places to go. We've done theme parks so any other suggestions are welcome!
I'm most excited about the fact that she hasn't seem me in 2 years! She had seen a couple pics since I've lost weight but hasn't "seen" me yet. Can hardly wait!

We used to live in Laguna Niguel. The zoo of course comes to mind. I'm a big fan of the Santa Ana mountains, and Cleveland national forest. I used to go hiking there. The girls and I liked hanging out at the surfing beaches. It was always fun watching the surfers, and just enjoying the sounds of the waves. The Trestles beach comes to mind, and I think another was called 3 points. I think. It's been a few years, so I forget the exact beaches.
We used to take weekend trips to Temecula just east of the Santa Anas, out in the dessert. I love the dessert. It's my kind of haunt. Not sure though if it'll be that pleasant in August. We'd visit the wineries and do all the wine tastings, then come home with all sorts of wines.
If you're looking for places to park the car and just noodle the day away, our favorites were to the north - Dana Point and Laguna Beach. Both were really good places to spend the day just hanging out, doing nothing in particular, blowing some money, eating things you probably shouldn't, and coming home with things you probably don't need.
Hope this helps.0 -
Use to surf Oceanside all the time.. I miss it !!!
make sure you have a burrito at http://www.yelp.com/biz/albertos-mexican-food-oceanside-3
the bean and cheese is GINORMOUS and amazing !0 -
Walking around LaJolla is wonderful.
I took surfing lessons north of San Diego, that was fun.
If you make it up to LA, the Warner Bros Studio tour is great. Its a real studio tour instead of the fake Universal tour.0 -
I live an hour away from Sequoia National Park. the Giant forest is there and the worlds largets living organism by volume, the General sherman tree is there. . its EPIC! i feel like a hobbit there! its beautiful!0

Kayaking with sharks and seals and around caves in La Jolla!0

I live in North County and I don't care how many times I've been I love going to the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park. I'm an annual pass holder and I really get the bang for my buck If you're just looking to burn a few hours you can always take the coaster down to old town and wander around at the shops and whatnot. Oceanside also has my favorite Sushi joint - Hon Sushi will get you all you can eat sushi for $22 - if you can put away 4 rolls you'll get your money's worth If you want to visit an incredibly beautiful library hit up the Dove Library in Carlsbad - it's big and gorgeous and you can pick up a book and read outside. Sometimes on my lunch break I'll go there and just read in the front and return the book at the end of my hour.
Of course, you could just go to the beach to walk/run/swim/lay out0 -
La Jolla cove is very pretty, as is Balboa Park. It's full of museums, gardens and trails and not too far from San D.0

What you could do too is check out some groupons that are available until you find something you like. Just make sure it doesn't expire before your trip. You could end up with a great deal on a super nice massage, or some kind of water adventure or a segway tour... might be worth it to check it out0

I have lived in San Diego for over 20 years - if you go to Coronado, there is a great bike/jog/walking path along the Silver Strand that goes from the city of Coronado to Imperial Beach. If you are looking to get in some excercise - there is nothing better than this walk along the strand!0
-
Harbor cruises are always fun, or you can even take the ferry over to Coronado one day and spend the day over there at the beach or lunch at the hotel Del.0

You could also do the tide pools in Point Loma but it's way South of Oceanside but still kind of cool to see. There are the seals at
the Children's Pool in La Jolla but parking can be a pain in the *kitten*, if you are patient then it's always cool to see and free!
Balboa Park is massive and could give you a calorie burn while sight seeing, and it is free, unless you decide to do the museums!
There is Seaport Village but it is kind of a tourist trap since it is in Downtown SD but if you have kids there is a rad Carousel that I used to love as a kid. Plus you could always walk and just sight see the Downtown area.
Hope that helps!0 -

Oh, I used to live in IB and my sisters and I would ride our bikes along that trail almost every day in the Summer!0 -

I've been meaning to go down there and run on this path for awhile now but just haven't gotten around to it. Where is the best place to park and start at?0 -
Also Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is a neat place to visit.0

Oh my god I miss San Diego! If your there you definitely have to do the beach, sea world, and, if there before i think July 6th?, you could go to the Del Mar fair. Other cool things to do that aren't as exciting but still beautiful are the flower fields in Carlsbad, if your up in Oceanside there is a awesome hiking trail on hosp way rd ( its all eucalyptus trees meant for the railroads way back then but it became a reserve), and if you down near the city of San Diego go to sea port village ( great restaurants, music, shops, and sights). Really anything you do in San Diego is amazing in my opinion:happy:0
-
The last day of the fair is the 4th of July but the Del Mar races will be opening up shortly after that.0

La jolla
Old town (mexican themed)
sea world
Zoo is awesome0 -
And I loved hiking Cowles Mountain (a mile and a half one way)0
-
The Carlsbad Caverns are awesome!!!!! Also if you have kids the Bellmont Park at the beach is nice instead of theme parks??? We are taking the kids down there for 3 days in July!!0
-
If the Padres are in town, I'd take in a ballgame. Petco Park is a beautiful stadium!0
-
Cowles Mountain is a great workout! I used to do that all the time but haven't been in awhile. Mission Trails is another good place to go.0
-
:flowerforyou: Bump. This will be helpful for me, my husband and I are looking to visit San Diego for his block leave. Thank you for asking such a great question!0
-
I just came back from San Diego. I would suggest wine tasting in Rancho Bernando or Escondido. My friends also really enjoyed the San Diego Zoo Safari Park which is in Escondido. Hope you have a great vacation!0

Stay away from the medical marijuana dispensaries, or you might not meet your activity goals, and you'll DEFINITELY go over your caloric intake LOL'z :smokin:0
