Is anyone else as overwhelmed as I am? I feel so clueless about all of this. To eat back burned cals or not? What's good to eat, what's not? Am I calculating my exercise calories properly, or am I? I think my main problem is that I'm reading TOO many posts, trying to get a grip on all of this.
I don't have a ton of weight to lose. I'm 5'10 and currently at about 168lbs, and want to get down to about 150. I'm eating better than I was, drinking more water, trying to be smart about all of this, but it's hard.. at least for me.
Wouldn't it be nice to have the weight come off as easily as it goes on?? I'm trying so hard to stay positive, but it's a challenge!

You will get all sorts of technical answers that I don't understand. Here is what I have been doing. I am at 1500 and I keep it at 1500 (or try) on days I don't exercise and days I do exercise. So I eat back my exercise calories. At least, I net 1200. Never below. Hope that helps!0

just hang in there. keep drinking lots of water and watching your calories. and exercise. you'll see the weight start to come off. as for exercise calories. i recommend not eating them back. if you want to lose weight faster, its best to not eat them back. that's what i do any way.

3. Eat less calories than you burn.

The trick is to feel better. Just move more, eat less and ensure you are understanding what food is going in your mouth.
I believe if you are more aware of what you are eating, you will lose weight. Just track it all, and exercise. You'll do fine.0 -

Put your info in the calc and set it to lose one pound per week or two pounds per week or 1.5 pounds per week. I'd set it at 1 pound per week at first until you get used to eating at a certain calorie intake.
Then you can increase your pound loss per week.
And exercise.. at first I didn't exercise but I lost anyway cause I ate under calories.
NOW I exercise and i lose twice as much but I only eat back 35% of the calories you 'earn' by exercise.

It is super overwhelming! And don't forget that there are a lot of OPINIONS about fitness and exercise out there, and a lot of conflicting theories. The only thing you can do is try something, see if it works for you, and if it doesn't, try something else. I had that same problem and fretted and changed my routine a couple of times, but once I settled down and just stuck to something, I got the results I wanted! You can do it.0

I was just thinking the same thing when I saw your post. You're not alone. I feel overwhelmed with all this every single day. Do cardio not weights.... do weights not cardio. Eat carbs, don't eat carbs. Eat fruit, don't eat fruit. BMR, TDEE and all that jazz confuses the heck outta me lol
I agree I wish it was as easy to lose the weight as it is putting it on.

Not everyone is the same...and not every body responds the same. What works for me...may or may not work for you. You just have to try thing until you can find something that works...and you can live with.
I stopped eating processed foods..pre-made foods and fast foods. They are so full of sugars , fats and sodium...along with thing you can't pronounce!! I stop eating it and the weight has been coming off pretty fast!
I never eat all my exercise calories back..some times I eat 1/2 other days I don't eat any.
I also drink lots, and lots of water!!

Don't overwhelm yourself. Keep it simple. Watch both what you eat and how much, drink lots of water, eat small meals and snacks to keep your metabolism up, and exercise. Run, walk, dance down the sidewalk to your mp3 player. If you're doing something, even if it's losing weight and getting healthy, you should have fun with it. Don't stress.0

I am similar to you at 5'8" 162. I'm trying to lose another 7-12 lbs. What I am doing is just trying to eat as whole and natural as possible, low sodium and low sugar. I only eat my exercise calories if I'm hungry but I won't force myself to eat them back if I'm not. Feel free to add me as a friend. It get's easier, It really does.0

Just hit the ten pound loss marker-and I didn't eat the pounds back. On days when I ate more,I exercised more or ate the fewest calories allowed for me which was 1280 plus or minus the next few days to balance. The latter is a poor strategy so try to eat the calories you need and exercise about 150 of them off everyday.0

Start by tracking calories and exercise. Even if you do nothing but this for a few months, you will at least then have the necessary data *for you* that will be incredibly helpful in determining where to go from there.
It's only complicated if you make it complicated...and for most people, it just isn't necessary to complicate it. Start simple, because simple tends to work (at least for a while). *Then* when you reach a simple plateau, then you can complicate it a little (and with your food/exercise logs, you will be better equipped to make the more complicated changes).0 -
Is anyone else as overwhelmed as I am? I feel so clueless about all of this. To eat back burned cals or not? What's good to eat, what's not? Am I calculating my exercise calories properly, or am I? I think my main problem is that I'm reading TOO many posts, trying to get a grip on all of this.
I don't have a ton of weight to lose. I'm 5'10 and currently at about 168lbs, and want to get down to about 150. I'm eating better than I was, drinking more water, trying to be smart about all of this, but it's hard.. at least for me.
Wouldn't it be nice to have the weight come off as easily as it goes on?? I'm trying so hard to stay positive, but it's a challenge!
It sounds like you're going about it the right way. Don't stress, there are MANY different posts with MANY different ways to accomplish the same goal but, you have to find what works best for YOU! If you are eating better, drinking more water, and getting your heart rate up, you'll reach your goal before you know it. I still enjoy a cookie now and then (no suicidal thoughts as a result, thankfully) but I log it on MFP and increase my workout to compensate. You can do it!0 -

It's really not that hard. So many people on here make it sound so much harder and confusing than it is. For every 5 forum responses I see at least 7 opinions and next to no facts.
You input your vitals into MFP, height, weight, etc., and it calculates your estimated BMR.
You input your activity level for a normal, average day. Sedentary, lightly active, etc.etc.. MFP takes that and creates a factor to estimate calories burned due to daily activity. BMR x Activity Factor = TDEE Total daily energy expenditure. How many calories you burn in an average day, doing whatever you do.
You input a goal weight loss. Say it's 1 lb per week. 3500 calories for 1 lb. 3500 x 1 / 7 = 500 calories per day deficit to lose 1 lb of weight per week. If it's 2 lbs: 3500 x 2 / 7 = 1000 calories per day deficit
TDEE - deficit = Net calorie goal MFP gives you.
If you exercise, you are burning more calories that day. So for that day, TDEE increases by the amount of calories you burn exercising. Look at the equation above. TDEE increases, net calorie goal increases by the same amount, and the deficit required to lose weight is still there. It's your choice to eat back exercise calories or not, but you do not hurt your weight loss progress by eating them.0
