Does it have to be WHEY protein?

Hi!

I'm currently using EAS soy protein for my protein shakes, but it seems like nearly everyone else here is using whey. Is there a significant difference?

    Soy protein is not as much of a 'high quality' protein in my opinion. I'm also *not* positive if it's a "complete" protein which means your body can't really absorb it until you complete the proteins by adding other food - someone confirm/deny this? I could be wrong.
    I start having hormonal problems when I consume too much soy. Some articles I've read say eating soy regularly can mess up your hormones and stall weight loss.

    But some swear by soy protein, so my guess is that it's bad for some (like me) but fine for others. If you feel any negative symptoms maybe try a different kind of protein :)

    They are both complete proteins... Meaning they both contain the essential amino acids. Whey is made by cheese/milk products and soy by soybeans. Soy protein also contains phytoestrogens, which increase estrogen in the body and is main reason many bodybuilders generally avoid using it.

    If you are Lactose intolerant then use Soy. If not then either is fine.

    soy gives me way too much gas and bloat, so i prefer whey for the safety of myself and those around me

    Soy is also less bioavailable than whey, but unless it's your primary source of protein, I wouldn't worry about it much.

    Personally I can't do dairy, so whey is out. And Soy interferes with my thyroid medication, so I use a plant based protein powder and love it.

    No, it does't have to be whey. But Whey is a complete protein abundant in BCAAs and has a PDCAAS of 1. The isolates are often friendly on lactose intolerant people. Read these guys:

    I came to this thread hoping to see what other proteins have as an advantage over whey, would be interesting to know!

    Soy probably has lots of nutrients, but I stay the hell away from it.

    There are also many books out there talking about the negative affects of soy...can't remember the popular one...I think it's called "The truth about soy" or something and then there are the ones mentioned in the links above.

    Also, there's different types of soy. Not all of them have been proven bad (which you'll get if you read the links and video).

    And before everyone jumps on me I do not think soy is evil, I just think we get enough of it, and a lot of it isn't fermented. It's added to most protein powders as well that are not soy based. I do eat and drink soy on occasion, I just don't like it when when people state you should choose soy over something else to someone who gets lots of soy. If you live in the forest and never have it, cool beans ;)

    Also, soy tastes like crap to me.

    I personally buy two forms of protein. One in bulk, 100% Milk protein isolate (which is 80% whey/20%casein). The other is a protein blend called Trutein which has 40% whey protein (mostly isolate), 40% casein, and 20% egg whites.

    I use the milk protein isolate typically right before a workout and immediately before bedtime. Milk protein isolate will continue to feed muscle tissue amino acids for up to 7 hours so its an ideal source late at night or to satisfy the body for longer periods of time. I'll have to find the study, but it was quite recent, and it compared athletes engaging in the same exercises with the same goals in mind (gaining lean muscle mass while limiting fat gains) and followed the same strict meals plans with the only difference being the different protein sources. The athletes who drank a milk protein shake prior to working out gained more lean muscle mass and less fat compared to the group who drank the whey protein shake.

    I use the Trutein blend when I want both quick and slow absorbing proteins. Whey protein will feed for about an hour, egg whites a bit longer...so I get a nice continuous stream of aminos for up to 7 hours.

    What do you use? I can't do dairy and soy messes with my hormone levels but i haven't been able to find anything else :(

    Vega One (which is super tasty), Life's Basics, and some other brands I can't remember right now. Most are some combination of yellow pea, brown rice, and hemp.

    I'm not big on coconut and I really like the Careone chocolate whey stuff, that's all. :p

    One scoop of that, two cups of milk, and a cup of frozen raspberries and I'm all set.

    Me too! I've been using Sun Warrior's vegan protein, which is rice protein. It's a fair bit pricier than whey or soy proteins, but I'm loving it. It comes in all different flavours, have only tried the chocolate so far...yum :)

    I use gemma pea protein and rice protein. You can also try hemp protein!

    I hold to the notion that soy is not proper to eat unless it is fermented, ie, natto, soy sauce, etc...
    I also believe that the whey should not be an isolate. But of course others may disagree on this. You can read about whey protein on www.mercola.com to see what form of whey dr mercola thinks is best...i trust his opinion:)

    I am using a Sequal Vanilla product. But any health food store, or organic grocery store will have plant based Proteins for sale.

    If you can't do dairy because you are allergic to the actual protein itself, then yes stay away from whey-based proteins. However, if you are allergic to the sugar from milk, lactose, you can still purchase whey protein isolate or milk protein isolate. The processing for both of these make them virtually lactose-free and are considered quite safe for those with even severe lactose intolerance.

    I personally can't do plant-based protein powders because they either have 1 or several of the following issues for me: 1)horrible taste; 2)poor mixing ability; and (3) undesirable chalky texture. For the record, yes I've tried Vega, Sun Warrior, and other popular and very pricey brands and find them to have at least one if not more of the mentioned traits.
